COMMENTARY: Michelle Obama in Standoff With Heckler: ‘I Don’t Care What You Believe’

The first lady has nothing to lose: Her approval ratings are high and President Obama is beginning his final term in office. She no longer has to take the crap from hecklers because it’s the politically correct thing to do. If she wants to go toe-to-toe with a heckler, then she can bring it.

And she did.

The fundraiser benefitting the Democratic National Committee was hosted at the Northwest DC home of Karen Dixon and Nan Schaffer. There were some 200 expected guests who paid between $500 and $10,000 to attend the reception, according to a DNC official. At one point, the crowd started shouting that they wanted Michelle Obama to stay and one woman standing near Sturtz said “You need to go!”

As Sturtz was escorted out, the heckler shouted: “…lesbian looking for federal equality before I die.”

But Michelle Obama, poised, composed and focused, didn’t let Sturtz distract her from her core message to the audience.

“So, let me make the point that I was making before,” the first lady continued. “We are here for our kids. So we must recapture that passion. That same urgency and energy that we felt back in 2008, 2012. Understand this — this is what I want you all to understand. This is not about us. No one back here. It’s not about you or you or your issue or your thing. This is about our children.”

Michelle Obama is a first lady with style, elegance and grace – but she’s also a dignified black woman from the South Side of Chicago who refuses to be disrespected.

Good for her. We’d expect nothing less.

  1. Mrs. Bush spoke at my brother’s graduation from Yale. A woman began heckling and she was picked up and carried away by Secret Service and no one said a word. Mrs. Bush did recognize the heckler, but the crowd applauded her removal.
I am dismayed by the level of disrespect shown to our President and First Lady. This is not a matter of 1st Ammendment Rights. This is just racist behavior.

  2. Good for our FLOTUS. She did not have to stand for such rudeness and disrespect and she handled it well. I understand speaking up for one’s beliefs, but there is a time and a place and a private function was not it, especially since the First Lady doesn’t sign executive orders. This rude -as-hell heckler also has forgotten that the President himself has done more for gay rights than any administration ever has. Now, I’d love to be a fly on the wall on the Obama’s last day in office when she tells off John Boner er, Boehner.

  3. White Superiority Complex … is a Mother f…… .. if the President & 1st Lady were White .. The Red Necks would love him…Put the Confedrate Flag away … you lost that war .. oh … and the election … Stupid ass Red Necks …

    • what I mean is this, she is a black woman first and then she is the first lady,, Let me point this out to you,,, EVE can come out in all of us black women, so don’t act like you don’t know what I’m talking about. ( I’m sorry I don’t know if your a women of color).

But first you have to remember Michelle is from the south side of chicago, and I’m not saying this to say because where she came from. Listen to her husband) he has said so many times Michelle is a tough cookie. and there have been times she was not taken any crap off her husband.

that is why is has been married over 20 years now. she knows how to handle heckler’s and everyone else. trust me.

  4. Oh wow,, Michelle is getting back to her roots,, she is truly a black women, don’t let her fool you,, if you see the video of her rolling her eyes at Bohnher at the dinner they had,,, she is really was acting like her-self, like most black women do. Don’t let those bangs fool ya,, she can really get black on your azz,,,

  5. She had the nerve to stay she had to stay in the closet to work and make a living. I bet she went right back in the closet after Michelle Obama got through with her. She was talking about she was concerned about the children. First of all children should not be having sex anyway. If my teenage daughter was having sex with a guy and I found out about it society expects for me as a parent to let her know that it is wrong. But if my daughter came to me and said that she was having sex with a girl and I said that it is wrong I would be accused of being homophobic. Can’t have it both ways.

    • You are right about that! Society as a whole does not want discipline and that is why america is going down the tubes! America is trying so hard to accept anything to keep peace, when it actually makes it worse! Yet you see these senseless stickers; ‘stand up and take back america!’ Gays should be fined for heckling, just like they fine celebrities for a homo comment!!

  6. Go First Lady Go. You and your husband are the most disrespected President and First Lady ever and enough is enough. She was surprised she got in her face. ROTFLMAO. Now wtach someone calls her a bully and disrespectful instead of the lady who caused the incident.
