Celebrity Revelations!

  • Every day we are inundated with news, updates, leaks and gossip about our favorite celebrities. With so much competing news, it’s hard to shock us.

However, my mouth did drop when I saw the recent story about Tina Campbell of Mary Mary and her husband Teddy, who has apparently cheated on her and, as a result of that and presumably other issues; she attempted to stab him and considered divorce.

While Mary Mary have their critics who suggest that they are too worldly, I am personally a huge fan of Mary Mary, their music and their reality TV show.  Last season, we saw Tina struggling to save her marriage and balance both a career and family all while being pregnant, again.  I guess now we have a clearer understanding about some of her breakdowns and outbursts. What I know for sure is that there is always a story behind the story. That’s why it’s important not to judge because you never know what a person is really going through. You only know what you see and think. But that is not necessarily the reality or truth.

Now back to my mouth dropping. It was actually not about Tina and Teddy’s struggle. Unfortunately, there is nothing abnormal about people struggling to maintain a healthy relationship. Instead what surprised me most was their transparency of fighting for their relationship and their request for the public to pray and fast for one month.

    Here’s what Teddy wrote:

    1. Deya, I understand your position on transparency. That is all good. We cannot, however, condone adult dependency. We need to tell people directly (no pun intended) that GOD is not going to GIVE anyone “… a deeper love & commitment to Him and to each other…” or “the greatest marriage we could have ever imagined.” They have to WORK for it.

Love and commitment are choices. We CHOOSE who we want to love. We CHOOSE who we want to commit to. Marriage is a process of transforming from a state of being single to a state of being married which requires work; it requires two people to decide to CHANGE.

In order for a worm to change into a butterfly it first has to work to wrap itself in a cocoon. Then it has to fight its way out of that cocoon in order to be strong enough to fly. If you see the butterfly struggling to get out and you cut the cocoon, she will soon die because she won’t be strong enough to fly.

The fighting that newlyweds (those married less than 5 years) do is the result of two things: 1) refusal to change from the single state and 2) the process of developing the strength and integrity to remain together during difficult times (worse, poorer, sickness). Getting married is a single day event whereas becoming married is a several year process. GOD is not going to let Tina & Teddy skate past this process. Everyone must go through and survive the difficulties of becoming married (which for some is like gladiator school) in order to remain married.
