Roland Martin is not leaving CNN quietly.

Martin’s last appearance on CNN was Friday after the network decided not to renew his contract.

But in an interview with the Huffington Post, Martin said that executives at CNN were uncomfortable with hiring black people as hosts and systematically stunted his rise at the network because he is a bold, opinionated African American man.

Martin said he came to CNN with the intention of getting his own show. He said that it was never made clear to him why he was not moving up at CNN, but he suspected that it was about race – and being black.

“You have largely white male executives who are not necessarily enamored with the idea of having strong, confident minorities who say, ‘I can do this,'” Martin said. “We deliver, but we never get the big piece, the larger salary, to be able to get from here to there.”

Martin said that he hosted highly-rated specials for CNN, so he didn’t understand why he wasn’t rewarded.

“If it’s a ratings game, and we won, how is it I never got a show?” he said.

Martin’s contract ended as CNN also parted ways with Soledad O’Brien but CNN also hired two high-profile white anchors, Jake Tapper and Chris Cuomo.

CNN President Jeff Zucker proudly said Tapper is now “the face of the new CNN” as some black journalists questioned why the “face” has to be white.

Martin was CNN’s highest-profile African American commentator and is followed by many viewers. Since rumors circulated that Martin could leave CNN, the network has offered more on-air opportunities to Van Jones, a former Obama administration adviser. Jones is also black.

Martin is known for his straight-forward, in-your-face analysis and fans say Martin is one of the few television commentators who keeps it real by articulating a black perspective on-air.

“I’ve worked hard to ensure that my voice wasn’t heard in one place,” Martin told Richard Prince, who writes a popular diversity column, “Journal-isms,” for the Maynard Institute. “I will continue with my show on TV One, a network I was with before CNN; will continue my daily segment on the Tom Joyner Morning Show; and will continue my nationally-syndicated column.”

“In the past few weeks since all of this speculation began, I have [had] numerous people reach out to me expressing their strong feelings about my work,” Martin said.

“Many of them are in entertainment, sports, politics, business, and everyday people,” he added. “Their feedback has been nothing short of amazing, whether it’s Sidney Poitier, Hank Aaron, Harry Belafonte, Charles Barkley, Stevie Wonder, to the brothers and sisters shouting at me as I walk down the streets of DC, New York, Houston, Detroit and other cities. I appreciate all of the love and support. It’s always amazing to me how you can be on for a short period of time but affect people in so many different ways.”

  1. Roland, you come across as one who thinks too highly of himself.Regardless of one’s race I watch the news to be informed not to hear a lot of personal opinions. You make your comments too personal to be objective. I am going to miss Soledad but not you.

I understand how career racism is done in the American work place. I too as a strong Black man get the same treatment on the job. We come thru when needed but never get the credit or the promotion. Just look at the President.

  3. Who ownes CNN to be honest they are really looking like FOX NEWS, CNN use to be the station to watch, but I stop when I felt they were changing into hypocrites, CNN racist Exec’s should be replaced instead of rewarded with bonus’s. soon the Koch’s will own it maybe a republican like mitt romney who cancelled Michael Baison show did not renew the contract, Mitt Romney own the station that did not renew M.Baison’s contract, now what is that saying to us, CNN u better watch out for you don’t want the wrath to come down on you but it will. & now Martin, who will be next? CNN not cool.

  4. Why is it that all these black commentators & radio shows, Micheal Baison, now Martin, what’s going on here? all on GOOD FRIDAY,ok lets see who will wear the wrath of God, CNN I stop looking at a long time ago. seems to far to the right, CNN is not what it use to be, now dismissing the wrong people & expect them to be silent & just take it, man have they got their balls on the wrong side.

CNN is afraid. CNN execs are bigots. CNN execs don’t like President Obama. CNN would rather be out of touch. CNN wants Black folks to be satisfied with a slanted, distorted, caucasion view of what’s going on with Black folks. That’s CNN’s message to us. Real talk though, CNN cannot be trusted. CNN is not worth our time. Let’s leave CNN. Let’s send CNN’s sponsors OUR ME$$AGE!!!

  6. The news media has always been white male operated. If Roland Martin thought for one minute he would move up the food chain in this industry proves that he was willing and ready to sell out. Van Jones is another stooge, who allowed himself to be set up as the voice of the “green” energy movement and the first black that Obama was willing to use and throw under the bus. Now Van Jones is being compensated by being tossed a few scraps as a reporter on CNN. Little by little we will see the dismantling of black radio, media fall like dominoes. They are no longer needed after playing such an instrumental role to lead blacks in the masses to deception and mind control of the Obama administration.

  7. My theory is that all Black Journalist that spoke out about the Trayvon Martin killing are being systematically targeted before the start of the Zimmerman trial. They figure the less informed we are, the more likely that the Black community will not have any influence on the outcome. Look forward to more Blacks who speak out to be targeted.
