1. Bryant Barnes – VANITY

Primed for a major moment in 2024, rising singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and alternative outlier Bryant Barnes proudly presents his emotive and vibe-laden debut VANITY EP out now via Mercury Records.

Fresh out the gates, the focus track “I’d Rather Pretend” has exploded virally, with follower counts skyrocketing and his previous five singles reaching new daily streaming peaks as a result. On his personal channels alone, cumulative views for “I’d Rather Pretend” have already crossed 17 million views on TikTok and are currently approaching 10 million views on Instagram Reels. On the song, Bryant’s vocals flutter over a piano driven track as he wrestles with mixed feelings as he exhales, “I want to love you but I’m scared, so I’d rather pretend.”

Elsewhere on the 7 track debut written and produced by Bryant Barnes and others, he emerges with a catchy and genre bending vision for alternative pop punctuated by indie spirit and enigmatic energy.

“Don’t Let It Be U” sees an upbeat acoustic guitar coast over an organic beat, while he flexes his skyscraper-size high register. Bryant paved the way for this body of work with “Give Me A Sign.” Beyond tallying over two million streams and counting, it earned critical acclaim. It landed in the wake of “Don’t Want A Love Song,” which has popped off to the tune of over 4.1 million Spotify streams and 2 million views on its music video. 2. 4Fargo – Left Cheek, Right Cheek

Turning up the heat in the middle of the summer, buzzing Decatur, GA singer, songwriter, and performer 4Fargo shares an energetic new single entitled “Left Cheek, Right Cheek” out now via Republic Records. Heading straight to the center of the dancefloor, bouncy 808s and hypnotic synths light up “Left Cheek, Right Cheek.” Simultaneously, 4Fargo leans into an upbeat and undeniable flow, balancing fast-paced rhymes with infectious melodies. He gets wild on the catchy chorus with a command, “Throw the ass that you got!” Stay tuned for the premiere of a raucous music video to accompany the track soon.

3. Icewear Vezzo – Shifter

A leader in Detroit’s rap scene and a pillar in the city’s community, Icewear Vezzo makes things happen. Touting his influence over soulful horns and liquid keys, the Iced Up Records CEO shares “Shifter,” his latest single and music video. Rhyming over gently propulsive snares and tasteful electric piano, Vezzo locks in with his appealing rasp, methodically explaining why nobody can match his luxurious lifestyle: “Thirty thousand in my pocket, cause I’m a shifter/All these diamonds around my neck, b*tch, I’m a shifter,” he intones on the hook. In the video, directed by Diego, Vezzo rides in two luxury whips–a matte black Cybertruck and a souped-up Rolls Royce Wraith–as he brings his riches back to his home neighborhood of 6 Mile in Detroit.

Following “Aiight,” a recent collaboration with his friend and fellow Eastsider Peezy, “Shifter” is the latest single to emerge in the wake of his acclaimed recent album Live From The 6.  Live From The 6 is a down-and-dirty collection of sinister street stories, alternating raw hustler’s anthems that elucidate the mindset required to escape rough circumstances with thoughtful reflections on the toll life on the streets take on those who make it out. The album features appearances from DaBaby (on the suave single “Perfect”) and YTB Fatt (on street hit “Come Outside“), and rolls out the red carpet for Vezzo’s fellow 6 Mile native: Detroit star Babyface Ray. Today, Atlanta native Darren Waller, a former NFL star and Pro Bowl selection, shares the music video “All In Your Head” from his 2-song EP titled Mind Games: It’s All in Your Head, available now HERE. 

Directed by ARod2Up, the video begins with a moment that leaves many pass catchers in their heads: getting laid out over the middle. However, it quickly shifts to different motivating scenes with Darren uplifting his homies, and even himself, through his lyrics. Inspiration for some of the scenes were taken from Ray Lewis’ legendary pregame huddle speeches, and there’s even a nod to the ‘We Believe’ Warriors with Darren rocking a Baron Davis jersey on top of a hill.

6. Jutes – Safe Word

Akin to the nostalgic, 2000s pop/punk sounds of Linkin Park and the nu-metal style of Deftones, Jutes’ independent sophomore album ‘Sleepyhead,’ a continuation of his ‘Sleepyhead EP,’ is set to release October 17th. The Ottawa-via-LA rock/pop artist and songwriter announces his new album today (8.1) with the release of “Safe Word.”

7. Fousheé – Still Around

Just when you think you know Fousheé, she zags. Folk hits to punk albums to rap features, she continues to refuse to be boxed in. And at a time when algorithms are putting all of our music in boxes, it couldn’t be more refreshing.

Today, Fousheé is thrilled to announce her incredible next album – Pointy Heights – set for release on September 13th via RCA Records.  The LP shares its name with the land her grandfather purchased in Jamaica, with the intention that her whole family could build homes and live there.With Pointy Heights, Fousheé zigs out of the frenetic R&B-punk of her acclaimed previous album, softCORE, as she paints an entirely new sonic palette. Playing the part of singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer, we enter a world shaped by her home, where old school, indie Reggae, rhythms buoy dance-friendly melodies and a natural cool that makes her the go-to collaborator for today’s biggest artists. 8. Mudbaby Ru – 40 Mo' Reasons

10. BoyWithUke – Ghost

Today, the now unmasked singer-songwriter BoyWithUke, aka Charley Yang, announced his final album, Burnout, the first full length project dedicated to his true self after taking off the mask that turned him into an internet sensation. Burnout, a more mature and authentic album filled with symbolism for embracing change, facing your fears and defying metaphorical boxes, is slated for release on November 8, 2024, via AWAL Recordings. Yang also confirmed this will be the last album released under the BoyWithUke moniker, with more information to follow. 

Along with the announcement, BoyWithUke today released his latest single, “Ghost,” a spacey blend of r&b, dark ambient and alternative rock. “Ghost” explored love and its aftermath with a captivating rhythm that transcended into a romantic rock explosion, tenderly depicting the unpredictability of infatuation. The song was debuted by Consequence, who stated, “For the artist born Charley Yang, the full-length project is an opportunity to introduce listeners to his most authentic self.”

On “Ghost,” BoyWithUke said: “‘Ghost’ has some of my favorite productions. It’s also the first time we used live drums. Overall the song is very dynamic, with changes in energy happening as often as possible.”

11. Jaz Karis – SUNSET BLVD

Today, R&B star on the rise Jaz Karis debuts the official video for her latest single “SUNSET BLVD.” The video continues to build momentum for Jaz as she’s set to release her debut full-length album SAFE FLIGHT Friday, September 20th. 

The fourth single from SAFE FLIGHT, “SUNSET BLVD,” is produced by Multi-Platinum, Multi-Grammy Winning Producer Needlz (Cardi B, Bruno Mars, Drake, Coi Leray) and is meant to evoke feelings of euphoria, blissfulness, and contentment. 16. Body Count – F*** What You Heard

Today, Body Count releases the music video to “Fuck What You Heard,” a blistering anthem (released on 7/19) that takes aim at the nation’s political landscape. With its unrelenting hook of “Democrips and Bloodpublicans,” Ice-T delivers a provocative critique from his independent perspective. “I have friends across the aisle,” Ice-T explains, “but my views are balanced and unapologetic.”

Through a seamless blend of footage, the music video highlights the chaotic and often brutal clashes that have come to characterize the current political climate of the U.S.

“Fuck What You Heard” is a track off Body Count’s forthcoming album, Merciless. For Body Count, it’s been a history of being both respected and feared – a barbed-wire thread that stretches back to the band’s origins as a project between Ice-T and Crenshaw High friend, Ernie C. Their first shot fired, the song, “Body Count,” was a mission statement on Ice-T’s 1991 O.G. – Original Gangster.

They touched a nerve with their first, self-titled 1991 album and its divisive track, “Cop Killer,” which inspired generations of bands to follow. What they took from growing up with Black Sabbath and being inspired by fellow L.A. legends like Slayer and Suicidal Tendencies has only upped the ante for generations of metal heads and hardcore fans. Body Count’s current line-up includes surviving OG’s Ice, Ernie C. and Sean E Sean joined by bassist Vincent Price, drummer Will “Ill Will” Dorsey, Juan “Juan of the Dead” Garcia and backing vocalist Little Ice.

17. MARIPOSA – Myers

One of the most exciting new artists in Latin rap today, the Colombian and Italian artist MARIPOSA announces the new release date for her explosive Inframundo EP is set for August 30th. 19. Gunna – one of wun

Today, four-time GRAMMY® Award-nominated, multi-platinum Atlanta rap superstar Gunna unveiled the official music video for his title track “one of wun,” directed by Spike Jordan and filmed at the Overtime Elite Arena in Atlanta, GA. 

The visual places Gunna in a different context altogether. This time around, he assumes the dual-role of two very different coaches competing against one another. Each of his characters masterminds strategy in his own way. One coach quietly orchestrates plays like chess moves, methodically drawing out his vision for victory in the locker room. 20. Alex Sampson – If You Were My Girl

Continuing a breakout summer, buzzing singer, songwriter, and vocal powerhouse Alex Sampson unveils a shimmering new single entitled “If You Were My Girl” out today via Warner Records – listen HERE.

The track channels fifties doowop with its breezy harmonies, bright piano, and loose guitar riff. The chorus soars, and emotions overflow as he pledges, “If you were my girl, I would never run away.” Alex practically hugs those last notes for dear life as the vocals echo to the heavens.

23. Rüfüs Du Sol – Lately

27. Big Sean – On Up

Ahead of the release of his forthcoming album Better Me Than You, GRAMMY®-nominated multiplatinum artist Big Sean releases a heartfelt new single and music video “On Up” available now via Def Jam Recordings. 
 
On the breezy, buoyant, and bold track, sampling Jodeci’s classic hit by the same name, Sean celebrates fatherhood. Backed by handclaps and an upbeat groove, he gets introspective as he muses, “I look into my son’s eyes and still see his innocence.” At the same time, he paints a vivid picture of his first year as a dad. Across the verses, he shares knowledge with his baby boy and cherishes the moment, “Close my eyes, picture heaven, and it’s where I’m at.” The accompanying visual literally places the viewer in son, Noah Hasani’s shoes. 29. Wayne Graham – I Had Plans

Today, Kentucky-based band Wayne Graham released their new single “I Had Plans” from their forthcoming album Bastion, due out September 6 via Hickman Holler Records/Thirty Tigers.

Bastion – their ninth studio album – is a sonic shift embracing their Appalachian roots, but bursting forward into indie rock sounds, from wall of sound guitars to listless shuffled rhythms, and sprinkled with avant garde and jazz influences. The album explores themes of the meaning of home, and the feeling of no longer belonging to a place you grew up in. Wayne Graham comprises brothers Kenny and Hayden Miles, as well as José Oreta and Germany-based instrumentalist Ludwig Bauer.

“I Had Plans” is a contemplative exploration of a familiar feeling – having lots of  dreams, plans, and being smacked down by a cruel world with other ideas. Over shuffling beats and a lilting piano melody, a mournful clarinet weaves with vocalist Kenny Miles’ laid-back vocals, who sings “all this time I’ve been acting like I was meant for something more / but I’m just here to follow the leader.”

Under The Radar premiered the track, saying, “‘I Had Plans’ takes on a breezy and meandering presence, colored by easygoing guitar, keys, and woodwinds. The track recalls singer/songwriters like Andy Shauf, both in its lithe instrumental touches and its lyrical character portraits…Yet, despite the track’s airy, sun-dappled energy, the lyrics reveal an understated disquiet.”

On their ninth studio album, the band welcome a sense of looseness, unraveling and a touch of the avant-garde as they continue to shift the New Appalachian movement forward with this seminal work, shaped by tradition (hymns, high and lonesome) but intent on breaking boundaries in the sonic landscape by experimenting with synths, production work and unexpected instruments like  clarinets. Their songs crackle with energy, using folk and country as a foundation for fearless explorations of jazz, punk, soul, noise, classic rock, and modern classical.

Opener “We Could’ve Been Friends” crawls along with the thrust of dance music—“we were trying to write an LCD Soundsystem song,” says Kenny—but they punctuate it with psychedelic guitars and violent percussion, as though soundtracking a nightmare of disconnection. It’s immediately followed by “The Patsy,” a jazz instrumental that sounds like Brubeck taking five deep in Appalachia.  “Shoot Me,” a slow meditation opened with a discordant piano riff, is a weary-yet-tense examination of racial attitudes in small town America, and “Swingin’ Round” – which has the humble melody of a Protestant hymn – was inspired by the drag ban.

“That song comes from a place of frustration,” he says. “I started writing it around the time the drag ban was being talked about in Kentucky and Tennessee, and as I worked on it, it morphed into a song about trying to find a way to communicate with people you disagree with, even if it’s family.”

“Our music is the way it is because we’re from here,” says Hayden Miles “It’s very specifically Kentucky.” As adults, however, they find themselves increasingly alienated from the culture and values of the place, a small town not unlike so many other small towns in America. “I feel very fortunate to be able to say we’re from here, and it’s inspiring to watch other people from this region find success,” says Kenny, who lives two hours away in Lexington, Kentucky. “At the same time it can be very isolating. It feels strange to play our hometown, because our music isn’t what people are looking for here. Sometimes Wayne Graham feels like a square peg in a round hole.”

40. SAINt JHN – Humble

Today, Grammy award-winning musician SAINt JHN announced the release of his new Afrofusion single, “Humble,” which is available to stream on all platforms HERE.

45. Mutant Academy ft. Quelle Chris – Liberation

Richmond, Virginia, hip-hop collective Mutant Academy announce their formal introduction as a full collective with their forthcoming debut album, Keep Holly Alive, out September 20th via Equity Distribution. This seminal work not only marks their official first Mutant Academy effort involving all of the group’s core members, but serves as a bold proclamation to the world of their intent to become a pinnacle name in the tapestry of hip-hop’s rich history of dynamic, multi-faceted groups. Picking up where they left off with the collective’s 4-song “appetizer” that was their TALK SOON EP released earlier this year, Keep Holly Alive is the group’s definitive statement and a testament to the power of working and creating alongside your chosen family.

Along with the album’s announcement, the collective shares the album’s lead single “Liberation,” featuring frequent collaborator Quelle Chris. The single epitomizes its title—altruistic yet subtle. With breezy production aided by ULB (Unlucky Bastards), Mutant Academy establishes their strength as a collective with each emcee bringing a distinct style to the track.

Conway The Machine has ensured steady production placements from Graymatter sprinkled throughout a large swath of his discography, and the MA producer also collaborated with Domo Genesis on “What You Don’t Get?” Now, the collective is ready to come back together to exert their musical identity as a group, cementing Mutant Academy among the storied groups in hip-hop’s history.

46. Bootsy Collins ft. FANTAAZMA, Giz & Bedroom Bootsy – Pure Perfection

Today, funk legend Bootsy Collins shares the new single “Pure Perfection” from his forthcoming album Album of the Year #1 Funkateer, due out October 25 (the day before the funk legend’s 73rd birthday) via Bootzilla Records/Equity Records. In celebration of the new record, today all Starbucks locations will be playing the “Bootsy Funky Summer Playlist,” which was specially curated by the icon himself, featuring his new music and classic hits.

“Pure Perfection” oozes like a hot summer day.  If there was ever a spiritual and sonic follow-up to the funk maestro’s famed “I’d Rather Be With You,” this might just be it. Alongside German rapper FANTAAZMA and rapper Giz, the track formally features “Bedroom Bootsy,” one of Collins’ legendary alter-egos, like Casper the Friendly Ghost and Bootzilla.

Bedroom Bootsy’s vocals whisper and growl, singing “I’m just an innocent bystander just standing by … waiting to wash your windows and  get a piece of that cherry pie.” Seductive, irreverent, and above all, pure funk, “Pure Perfection” is another facet that shows what the funk legend has been cooking up in his home studio in Cincinnati, keeping the funk alive and refreshing his own creative spark with collaborators.

On his 23rd studio album Album of the Year #1 Funkateer  the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer  finds himself in a new position – that of coach and above all, producer. Crafting a sound that sonically runs the Bootsy gamut from bedroom Bootsy, to space-alien adventures to unexpected rock, Collins has drawn together a network of collaborators from Snoop Dogg, Dave Stewart, Wiz Khalifa, October London, Fantaazma and many more who light the fire in him and helped him make the album of the year.

“When I start on a project now, it’s about getting the energy from people around me,” says funk maestro Bootsy Collins. “Then I proceed to gather transmissions from the universe to know what to talk about. It’s important to me to see who the universe brings to me, and I’ve been really blessed that every time I want to do a new record, I get these incredible musicians around me, right on time. That’s what this album helps me do—Transmitting & receiving with different musicians and artists that have the same desire I had when I was their age.”

This open-minded attitude has helped Collins reach new generations for more than five decades.

From his early work bringing a youthful vigor and refreshing James Brown’s backing band as a founding member of the J.B.’s and learning the Power of the One to his seminal work with George Clinton and the Parliament-Funkadelic universe, playing on most of their landmark albums over the next decade and co-writing such classics as “Up for the Down Stroke,” “Tear the Roof Off the Sucker (Give Up the Funk),” and the chart-topping “Flash Light.”  He also led the side project Bootsy’s Rubber Band, recording multiple gold-certified albums and the Number One R&B hit “Bootzilla,” and began contributing to recordings by artists including Keith Richards, Iggy Pop, and Herbie Hancock. When Rolling Stone put together their list of the Greatest Bassists of All Time, Bootsy was ranked in the top five.

He collaborated with dance superstars Deee-Lite on their 1990 smash “Groove Is In the Heart,” provided the lead vocal on Fatboy Slim’s Grammy-winning 2000 hit “Weapon of Choice,” and acted as the narrator on Silk Sonic’s 2021 platinum album An Evening with Silk Sonic (he even gave Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak the name for their project).

The seventeen tracks on Album of the Year cover all the bases, from the silly Bootsy (on “Chicken & Fries”) to the sexy Bootsy (“Pure Perfection,” which uses a delivery that Bruno Mars calls “Bedroom Bootsy voice”) to the social commentary of “2Nite we Rise.”

The social commentary is true to Bootsy’s heart – he has spent the past year bringing his mission Funk Not Fight to SXSW, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Compton and his hometown in Cincinnati, with more cities to be announced. The Funk Not Fight project is a growing initiative that encourages peace, creativity, and anti-violence by creating community hubs that provide mental health resources and music studios, among other activations, still being announced.

47. Tecn N9ne – The Punishment

Opening up like never before, chart-topping multiplatinum hip-hop legend and the most successful independent rapper of all-time Tech N9ne shares a revelatory new single entitled “The Punishment (Lockdown)” out today via Strange Music. Listen HERE.

A thick bass-y bounce and organic percussion anchor the rhythm, while Tech paints a picture of a formative childhood memory. Turning back the clock to high school, he recounts a particular summer where every move seemed to land him in hot water with his folks. At the time, he didn’t realize getting “grounded” would be for his own good. Bringing listeners to the kitchen table, he steps into his stepfather’s shoes, “And if you keep sneaking out next summer you’ll be on punishment again.”

However, it all makes sense now, “But 17 I ran away, I didn’t understand the way he was prepping me to become the multimillionaire I am today, kept me safe, my family helped a lot, if I may highlight, I see now my stepdaddy all this time was pushing to save my life.”

With screenplay-worthy narration and dialogue, Tech asserts himself as a storyteller of the highest order on “The Punishment (Lockdown).”

It lands on the heels of “The Birth,” which has gathered over half-a-million streams and 330K YouTube views on the music video. 48. The Blessed Madonna ft. DJ E-Clyps

Comprised of 24 tracks, including the singles “Mercy” ft. Jacob Lusk, “Serotonin Moonbeams,” and “Happier” ft. Clementine Douglas, Godspeed was written over the course of three years, detailing thousands of hours worth of work.

The album is both a testament to Marea Stamper’s (aka The Blessed Madonna) decisive and far-reaching influence, and a homage to her roots in underground electronic music. Drawing on a rich groundswell of collaborators —from  pop megastars in Kylie Minogue to long-established names at the beating heart of the US underground like Jamie Principle and A-Trak, breakout acts like Joy Anonymous and vocalists tracing classic soul (Danielle Ponder), new-age gospel (Jacob Lusk) and UK RnB (Joy Crookes) — Godspeed explores the myriad of sounds, eras and touch points that make The Blessed Madonna the artist she is today.

“Godspeed: the word marks the beginning of a journey and sometimes the end of one,” The Blessed Madonna explains. “After nearly a year in lockdown, when I signed the paperwork and knew that I was going to be allowed to make this album, I called my dad in Kentucky to tell him the good news. He could not contain his pride and in a way his relief. I was going to be ok. He says it better than I do at the beginning of the record. A black & white photograph of The Blessed Madonna’s husband, Vadim, wearing a custom-made ‘Godspeed’ belt buckle is depicted on the reverse of the vinyl sleeve, for example, while the vinyl’s gatefold features a collection of repurposed club relics lifted from across The Blessed Madonna’s 30+ year DJ career.

49. Orville Peck – Stampede

Today, trailblazing country artist Orville Peck releases the eclectic duets album Stampede. Boasting singles like “Midnight Ride” with Kylie Minogue & Diplo and “Death Valley High” alongside Beck, the project pushes the boundaries of country music by creating a unique, genre-blurring blend of styles with each collaborator. Listen HERE.

The album kicks off with “Cowboys Are Frequently Fond of Each Other,” a cover of queer anthem featuring vocals from country music icon Willie Nelson. 50. Pecos & The Rooftops – One Drunk Summer

Today, Platinum-certified rising Texas-based country rock band Pecos & The Rooftops return with a brand new single entitled “One Drunk Summer.” Listen HERE via Warner Records. It notably marks the group’s first release since their acclaimed self-titled debut album, Pecos & The Rooftops, in 2023.

The track conjures up all kinds of nostalgia with its airy instrumentation, vivid storytelling, and hazy production. Loose clean guitar sets the tempo, wrapping around the beat as memories naturally come into focus.
