NEW YORK (AP) — A rising star in college basketball’s coaching ranks who police said threw a punch that led to the death of a New York City tourist who apparently mistook him for an Uber driver pleaded not guilty to an assault charge Thursday night.

Wake Forest University assistant coach Jamill Jones attacked digital marketing guru Sandor Szabo around 1:15 a.m. last Sunday in Queens, causing him to fall and smash his head on the sidewalk, police said.

Szabo, visiting from Boca Raton, Florida, banged on the window of Jones’ SUV while looking for his ride after his stepsister’s wedding, police said.

A person familiar with the investigation told The Associated Press that Szabo may have been drunkenly knocking on car windows before Jones allegedly confronted him. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the person was not allowed to speak publicly.

The coach got out, followed Szabo to the sidewalk, clocked him and sped off, police said. Szabo never regained consciousness and was taken off life support Tuesday.

Jones, 35, of Kernersville, North Carolina, turned himself in to police Thursday, accompanied by a lawyer. He was arraigned Thursday night on a misdemeanor assault charge and released on his own recognizance after entering his plea. The coach’s next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 2, according to a spokeswoman for the Queens district attorney.

Jones was with his family after the court session, his attorney, Alain Massena, told the AP.

“This was a tragic accident, and Mr. Jones and his family send their deepest condolences and their thoughts and prayers to the Szabo family,” Massena said.

In a statement, Wake Forest said the school would comment further once it gathered more information.

Jones, a Philadelphia native, joined the Demon Deacons staff in May 2017 after coaching at Central Florida, Virginia Commonwealth and Florida Gulf Coast and playing at Arkansas Tech and North Platte Community College in Nebraska.

Wake Forest head coach Danny Manning said at the time that Jones was a “well-respected bright mind” in the coaching world and brought “new blood” and “new perspectives” to Wake Forest.

Szabo, also 35, was “super outgoing, friendly, and an incredibly smart businessman,” said his company, at What If Media Group, based in Fort Lee, New Jersey.

“He was always upbeat, positive, kind and caring,” the company said in a Facebook post. “He was fun to be with, interesting, and always interested. He was a really good person.”

Szabo, who lived in Boca Raton with his brother, always had a bright smile and shared a love of fishing, cooking and family, the company said.

“His beautiful spirit and his love of life will remain with us,” the company said. “We are going to miss him dearly.”

Why is it so many White people coming to this website just to spread their hate with raciest comments or pretend that they’re Black and does the same thing? 🤔🤔

Sounds like Trayvon to me. Except this time, Trayvon was white. Think about that for a minute.

    None of this is good.

Ummm, Cda, that’s EXACTLY what George Zimmerman did and he was praised and acquitted after MURDERING Trayvon Martin!!!

    • Mac Daddy on said:

Uh, no. Georgie was straddled by Trayvon thug having his head repeatedly bashed into a concrete sidewalk before he fired. All proved in court by eyewitnesses and medical photos. Additionally, his defense in court was never, Stand your ground law. Educate yourself fool

      • Weezie on said:

You need to check facts too. since he witnesses recanted their testimony. One said he lied because he was friends with Zimmerman, and the other just lied. But, he couldn’t be retried for the same crime…Double Jeopardy!

      • Mac Daddy on said:

Byot@h your weave is too tight you starting to go delusional. Completely false and made up. Georgie was following Trabon, but he doubled back and attacked him. Evidence was overwhelming

Perp was arraigned and released for jaywalking type misdemeanor. If races were reversed he’d be in jail for his own protection from the ensuing riot and awaiting his murder trial. You folks in Florida need to protest this. Find a cause was he gay? How about just for injustice in a pc collapsed society.

That’s completely right if white hit black it will be considered as a racist crime but black can kill white and he’s released, back to his normal life until trial, where’s justice for all here.

  5. Is it that serious, we black folks don’t like anyone even touching our cars, we treat those vehicles like some sort of god.
I’m quite sure this gentleman maybe a little tipsy or should I say drunk, but it didn’t had to go that way.
One thing about us black folks, we’re quick to get angry and don’t have any self control.
Look at the murder rate in Chicago, like Chris Rock say
    “I like Black folks but I can’t stand Nig@ers.
And the guy that punch the guy is one

    • Y’all miss the definition of that “N” word. What u meant was that N word is a person whom would borrow money from You knowingly that they’re not going to pay you back, or that son whom would just miss your car changing lane and would not acknowledge that he or she didn’t meant it, or that person who is in line cussing her boo or his friend out so that everyone can hear. These or the N word I’m talking about no matter what race creed or color. Peace

Szabo isn’t innocent. According to reports on other sites he was banging on car windows and punched another resident. Sounds like Jamil was standing his ground and protecting himself and his property. Just like our always fearful law enforcement officers, it appears that Jamil was in fear of his life. No telling what would have happened if he tried to drive away. Jamil learned from Florida – don’t push a man who is verbally abusing and threatening your Family. Jamil also learned from the recent incident in Georgetown. Ketchazo Paho was driving and a cyclist hit his car. When he stopped to call police, the cyclist hit him with a lock. Time to stop backing up and being passive. If you have a gun – shoot first; if not don’t push – throw the old one hitter quitter. You have an inherent right to defend you and your property. Szabo should not have approached him or touched his car. Jamil get a good attorney and take your chances with the crooked justice system. At least you will go home and be able to fight the charges instead of your family crying over your body. Glad you’re still alive.

    • You sir are a fool. Video evidence shows the coach get out of his car and follow the white guy then hit him so hard he murdered him. If your in fear you do not follow someone in order to kill him.

      • Sharon Phillips-Pittman on said:

So why do white people follow blacks and say racist things and some hit too then call the police

    • Gravely is another black racist with a HUGE anti white chip on his shoulders. Races reversed these mf’s would be rioting and demanding hate crime charges are filed. This piece of s–hit needs to be charged with aggravated manslaughter. As for you big bad gravely shouldn’t you be at your black lies matter convention> Black-boy!
