“If you have a mother, please kiss her,” is what Deborah Gregory ask. Author of the book series Cheetah Girls and Essence writer has been on the hunt to find out who her birth mother was.
At the age of three Gregory was dropped at a foster home with little to no memory of her mother and the family she once had. Jacque Reid goes Inside Her Story with Gregory about the journey to learn about her mother.
“For me the luckiest part was I had been a half-sister in the system,” explained Gregory of her search. “She lived with my mother for 12 years.”
Upon digging up more information about her mother and growing up in the foster care system Gregory made a startling discovery.
“We had been homeless and that’s how I became a ward of the state. My sister didn’t tell me that. I think it was very painful for her so I think she concocted a story,” explained Gregory. “Too painful for her to remember.”
