Roland Martin: Where Do The Nation’s Black PhD’s Come From?
Receiving a PhD or MD is the highest academic degree that anyone can receive once graduating from medical or graduate school. The University of Maryland Baltimore County is the largest producer of African-Americans who go on to complete their MD’s and PhD’s.
President of The University of Maryland, Baltimore County, Freeman Hrabowski talks with Roland Martin about the success of these graduates and what it takes to get them there.
“We are the largest producer of African-Americans that get MD’s,” explained Hrabowski. “We’re also in the top 10 in producing PhD’s in science and engineering. Literally under 1% of MD’s are African-Americans.”
Hrabowski credits the success of these students to the staff and students who are willing to work hard.
“UNBC is an institution that looks like what America would look like. It’s a very multicultural place,” explained Hrabowski. “But what makes the difference is that we have a caring staff and students who are serious.”
Getting side by side with students and guiding them through is what also helps students. “You need to be nurturing them and supporting them,” expressed Hrabowski. “Building community among young people can help them to reach their goals.”
