This past Sunday, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters of South Africa was crowned Miss Universe in Las Vegas. Although she was celebrated for her achievements, another contestant got love across social media.

Second runner-up, Miss Jamaica Davina Bennett, decided to rock her natural hair for the contest, and many folks praised her as an image of inspiration for girls across the world.

In an Instagram post about her experience, Davina said, “I did not win but I got what I was seeking. I won the hearts of many, I got to highlight Deaf awareness, I stand as the first afro queen to have made it thus far, I represented my little island and I received all the love one could possibly wish for…. THANK YOU!!!”

  1. Always have to find something negative. why can’t you display positive and keep the negative thoughts out of the public eye. Cast out your own people no matter how positive they are or try to be. Sad. Glad she had a platform to discuss her cause & fight good job!!!

  2. I notice a lot of blacks are going back natural. The hair look great. I say sometime we as blacks have been beat down even by many in our own race that we fail to see the greatness we hold.

  3. Ms. Bennett is gorgeous. However, either that is a really bad photo or those ugly ass shoes are making her legs look like twigs. That bikini isn’t isn’t the most flattering either. She’s wearing a blue bikini, a yellow sarong, and beige platform stripper shoes. Add the white sash and all those colors totally clash. I’m thinking this getup had to cost her points. However, that yellow gown she wore was stunning. She looked like a goddess. She was one of the most striking contestants in the competition. In a contest where, after seeing one after the other strut across the stage, they all kind of start to look alike. Kind of like looking at wedding dresses in a bridal boutique. But no one compared to her. She’s beautiful.

    • I said the same thing Kates. Busy, busy colors and an ugly shoes like she’s about to topple over any minute. I’m glad she was placed though. That sarong did nothing for her and I do know there must be a prettier bathing suit than that. Congrats my peeps!!!
