The San Diego International Film Festival has chosen “Straight Outta Compton” actor Jason Mitchell to receive its Rising Star Award, reports Variety.

The award will be handed out on Sept. 29 at the festival’s Night of the Stars Tribute at the Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla.

Mitchell was working at a New Orleans restaurant when he auditioned via Skype for the role of Eazy-E in Universal’s “Straight Outta Compton.” He went on to win the African American Film Critics Association Award for supporting actor and appeared opposite Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele in “Keanu.”

The actor just wrapped a lead role in “Mudbound” opposite Jason Clarke, Carey Mulligan and Garrett Hedlund for director Dee Rees. He can next be seen as co-lead in “Skull Island” for Warner Bros. and Legendary opposite Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Sam Jackson, John C. Reilly and John Goodman.

The San Diego International Film Festival will run Sept. 28-Oct. 2. Screenings will be held in the Balboa Theater and Regal Theaters in downtown San Diego, and ArcLight Cinemas in La Jolla.
