Music executive and record producer LA Reid is responsible for practically everything on your radio, in your car and on your phone — for the last 30 years. Literally. From The Deele, Babyface, Toni Braxton, Future, Pink, Avril Lavigne, Whitney Houston and anybody else you can think of, Reid is likely apart of their success.
In his new memoir, Sing To Me: My Story of Making Music, Finding Magic, and Searching for Who’s Next, he talks about his infamous love story with Pebbles, the process of discovering new talent and much more.
He talks to the Tom Joyner Morning Show about which artist he’d call his greatest achievement and why it’s important to reinvent yourself no matter how successful you may be.
On his instinct for finding and signing talent:
“It’s where I get my excitement. I love the idea of discovery. It’s fun to work on established artist but my true joy is to find an artist that no one knows.”
On his greatest achievement:
“Sometimes I say Babyface. He’s the first artist I zeroed in on.”
How do you reinvent yourself after all these years?
“I always go back and just look at where I am and say what tools do I need to move forward. If I have to go back to school, I’ll do it. I literally stopped running my company in 96 and I went to the Harvard Business Program. I stayed on campus for three months and studied day and night. So I walked away with an Executive MBA.”
Missing the opportunity to sign Lady Gaga:
“Lady Gaga. That’s my career blunder. That’s when you know you need to reexamine yourself.”
