The Episcopal Church has taken a major step towards diversifying their leadership by inducting their first African-American national leader. Bishop Michael Curry will serve as the church’s first Black bishop at the Episcopal General Convention in Salt Lake City. Curry was at the helm of the Diocese of North Carolina for almost 15 years. He will take on the position that was previously held by Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori, who broke barriers as the first female leader of the congregation. Bishop Curry’s induction comes at a time when race has been pushed to the forefront of a national conversation. The induction ceremony will take place at the Washington National Cathedral.
