Despite a Supreme Court ruling this summer that legalized same-sex marriage,  a 5-year-old California girl has been barred from attending her Christian elementary school all because her parents are a lesbian couple, reports ABC 10.

Now, the unnamed girl has been thrust into the center of a white-hot debate that pits religious freedom against nondiscrimination rights. She was scheduled to begin kindergarten at Mt. Erie Christian Academy in San Diego, California, when the family received a notice that “she was no longer welcome at the place where she had attended both preschool and summer school.”

Via ABC 10:

Sheena, a stay-at-home mom, told the news station that school officials told her and her spouse, Lashaune, who is in the Navy and away on deployment, the issue had nothing to do with the child.

Sheena told Team 10 she and her wife were summoned to the school the Friday before Labor Day, where they were shown to a room to meet with the pastor.  After a prayer, Sheena said the pastor dropped the bombshell. “It was heartbreaking,” Sheena said. “I didn’t finish the conversation with them when they took us in the room because I just, I didn’t want to look at them any longer.  I just couldn’t believe that they did that.”

A woman, who described herself as the director of Mt. Erie, told the television news outlet that the school has a non-discrimination policy. One of the mothers provided Team 10 with a copy of the school’s parent and student handbook, which was revised in June 2015:

“Mt. Erie Christian Academy is a religious, Bible-believing institution providing education in a distinct Christian environment, and it believes that its biblical role is to work in conjunction with the home to mold students to be Christ like. On those occasions in which the atmosphere or conduct within a particular home is counter to or in opposition to the biblical lifestyle that the school teaches, the school reserves the right, within its sole discretion, to refuse admission of an applicant or to discontinue enrollment of a student.

This includes, but is not necessarily limited to, living in, condoning or supporting sexual immorality; practicing homosexual lifestyle or alternative gender identity; promoting such practices; or otherwise having the inability to support the moral principles of the school (Leviticus 20:13a; Romans 1:21-27; Matthew 19:4-6; I Corinthians 6:9-20).”

The couple is now seeking an attorney to file a civil rights lawsuit against the school.

  1. It’s the child going to school, not the parents. Why should the child have to suffer! That child should have priority because of a parent in the military, but instead the school acts on discrimination? These people are not showing Christian values, they are just homophobic bigots. Respect our military and their families because they are fighting for everybody – as the schools should fight for every child.

Homophobia: A (hate) word made up by gays to label anyone that goes against their chosen lifestyle.
I say “chosen” because one of these women “chose” to be with a man, hence, creating a child and now choses to be with a woman.
These women put their child in a “Christian” based school which teaches against their lifestyle. They would be trying to sue the school if their child came home and said her teacher told her that people who live this lifestyle was living in sin and they were going to hell. So send your child to a school that accepts your lifestyle, that’s it, problem resolved.

It isn’t about hating the person, it is about hating the sin. Yeah, I know some will want to attempt to put me on blast for that, feel free. This conversation can go back and forth all day and everyone will take a different position. However the words Love and Judgement have taken on a life of their own ever since this debate started. While I believe wholeheartedly in gay rights, it should not be at the expense of trampling on every religious freedom their is.

Please people please pray for a understanding. Of the bible. According to the bible we are to show love. No oone in the christian community hate the lbgt community. Peoe have a right to their opinion. Because my opinion may differ from yours does not mean i hate gays. I love all people, just not the life style that they have a right to have if they want. We all have to die & see jesus for ourselves

    • Timekeeper, I agree; hate the sin not the person.

Like you, I support gay rights but the school has a policy and their policy says that they do not accept the parent’s lifestyle.

The school is a private institution and has First Amendment rights to bar membership based on religious beliefs.

As someone else stated, the parents should not want their child in a school where she is not wanted.

I think the parents should use this as a teachable moment for their child as well as themselves. The school is exercising their religious freedom and so should the parents.

  4. Why would this couple even want their child attending a “Christian” school-knowing that so called “:Christians” are HOMOPHOBIC and do not tolerate Gay lifestyle?

I don’t know what Bible “Christians” read-but the one that I read does not teach HATRED of others!!!!!

Being Christian doesn’t make you homophobic. It means that you believe God’s word regarding homosexuality and that does not include fear of any man. I ain’t scared of nobody! I love people but not enough to put anyone before God. That is not His design. You can love gay people, as we all should, but never condone what God says is wrong. Blessings!

the child WENT to pre school and summer school there AND NOW THERE’S A PROBLEM??? her mother is in the navy, serving their country, and could possibly die in the service of that same country!!!! but the child she loves won’t be accepted because of her mother’s sexual preference. some people don’t have a clue what being a Christian is about. it’s NOT about judging, interpretation, and man made rules that go against the LOVE OF CHRIST for all people.

My thoughts exactly. This whole pushing this lifestyle on the majority is out of hand. GI somewhere where they welcome your lifestyle.

  7. It is a Christian School. Unless it is public, they do not have to allow your child to attend school there. Find another school and move on. You do not have the right to change the policy of a christian based school. No they are not discriminating against you. You simply do not meet there admission criteria.
