Getting disciplined in front of your friends is embarrassing enough.

Getting disciplined in front of the whole world? Well, that’s another story completely.

But that’s exactly what happened to a teenager in Baltimore who was confronted by someone who appears to be his mother after he was caught in the streets during Monday’s unrest in the city.

Hours after the funeral service for Freddie Gray — the 25-year-old man who died in police custody after suffering a severed spinal cord — youth stranded after school due to the shut down of major train stations engaged police in violent clashes that left some 15 officers injured. At one point, an officer was seen throwing rocks back at the young teenagers, a local CVS pharmacy was set ablaze, and more than two dozen were arrested.

And according to ABC Baltimore affiliate WMAR, the young teen on the video above was one of those participating. The site writes that the mother saw her son on television throwing rocks at police, though NewsOne has not been able to confirm the authenticity of this claim.

But if the video is any indication, she wasn’t very happy with him for some reason. And we can only assume that reason is because he was somewhere he knew better than to be.

The result? This “beat down” caught on tape that prompted many to dub the woman “mom of the year.”

Imagine this is your son. Do you agree with how she handled the situation? Sound off below…

  1. You’re dammed if you do and dammed if you don’t.
Society wants to dictate how each household or parents discipline their kids or possible go to jail if society doesn’t approve. If you don’t discipline them society condemns you for not raising them right. Then they go to jail where they are told what to do or suffer the consequences.
I am a single black mother of three sons 24, 23, 17 and I was the boss not society. I believe in old fashion butt whopping and told my kids at a young age you can call the police or report me to the school but at the end of the day this is my house and I make the rules. My sons are doing well but I was in control not society or the kids.

    • Kay,
When I was young, my parents spanked us and all of us turned out semi-sane (?) and today, contribute greatly to society. Of course, not one of us is perfect but as adults, we appreciated what our parents tried to teach us. At first, it may have been considered fear of our parents but as we got older, we KNEW it was nothing but love. Today, we are grateful that we had the best parents in the world and I am willing to bet that your sons believe that you are the best Mother that ever walked this earth.

I know that what you considered an ” old fashion butt whopping” is not the same as beating your kids to the white meat, but making sure that their punishment was appropriate.

For parents like you, I say THANK YOU!

      • Oh and Ms. Graham’s son was on the news and he said he KNEW he was wrong and that his Mom did the right thing. He gave her flowers!
He appears to be a good kid but as most youngsters, he went against his Mom’s wishes. All kids do it and he paid for his wrongdoing.
        I applaud Ms. Graham!

  2. Why is this mother being celebrated for emasculating her son in public on national television? The violent behavior displayed by this mother was unacceptable. This was a teachable moment that she missed out on by cursing, slapped and pushing. As a matter of fact, she could be doing more harm than good (anger, depression and/or suicidal thoughts). I say this because the video will always be on the Internet and his friends/foes will continuously razz him about it. Let’s not forget, this image of a violent black mother will be displayed around the world. If my memory serves me correct, this is the image that black women were trying to get away from. Put the shoe on the other foot and the father would have been arrested immediately.
