On Monday, a handful of questionable tweets from comedian Trevor Noah were unearthed just hours after he was named the new Daily Show host.
Noah, who hails from South Africa, was bestowed the title by Comedy Central after appearing on the show a handful of times. But even a strong co-sign from Jon Stewart didn’t stop a handful of people, including BuzzFeed’s business editor Tom Gara, from revealing some of his old tweets that made fun of Jews, lesbians, and overweight people.
Almost bumped a Jewish kid crossing the road. He didn’t look b4 crossing but I still would hav felt so bad in my german car!

Comedians’ zingers never transition well online, as we’ve seen from others like Mike Epps and Marlon Wayans, so Noah took to the platform to respond to the so-called backlash.
To reduce my views to a handful of jokes that didn’t land is not a true reflection of my character, nor my evolution as a comedian.

Comedians like Patton Oswalt and Family Guy creator Seth McFarlane came to Noah’s defense. Comedy Central also delivered a statement defending their choice:
“Trevor Noah pushes boundaries; he is provocative and spares no one, himself included.
“To judge him or his comedy based on a handful of jokes is unfair. Trevor is a talented comedian with a bright future at Comedy Central.”
To be fair, some of the jokes were corny at best.
