Malcolm-Jamal Warner, who famously played Bill Cosby’s son Theo on The Cosby Show for eight seasons has finally spoke out against the sexual assault allegations mounting against his TV dad. It was during an upcoming Billboard interview that Warner was asked about Cosby and how it feels to watch him go through this and he said:

“He’s one of my mentors, and he’s been very influential and played a big role in my life as a friend and mentor. Just as it’s painful to hear any woman talk about sexual assault, whether true or not, it’s just as painful to watch my friend and mentor go through this.”

Warner refused to speak directly about the allegations as he claimed, “because obviously, I was not there.” His sentiments are very similar to Phylicia Rashad’s, who played Cosby’s beautiful and devoted wife, Claire. She was lambasted when she was quoted as saying:

“Forget these women,” Rashad said. “What you’re seeing is the destruction of a legacy. And I think it’s orchestrated. I don’t know why or who’s doing it, but it’s the legacy. And it’s a legacy that is so important to the culture.”

While Rashad had to clear up the “forget these women,” she remained firm on thinking that Cosby’s legacy is being destroyed purposefully. Warner echoed those feelings, saying, “The Bill Cosby I know has been great to me and great for a lot of people. What he’s done for comedy and television has been legendary and history-making. What he’s done for the black community and education has been invaluable. That’s the Bill Cosby I know.”

We’re looking forward to reading the full article on Billboard, but it’s doubtful that Warner will say anything else about the controversy. Cosby’s accusers continue to grow and speculations are swirling. Most recently, Beverly Johnson‘s story was challenged by her former talent manager, Don Gibble, who claimed that Johnson never talked about the particular encounter with Cosby when she claimed she was drugged and assaulted. In fact, Gibble said she lied.

Cosby has been attempting to continue to perform his stand up, but many of the tour dates have been met with angry protestors, demanding that Cosby leave their town. The legendary comedian, actor and way-maker for many Black stars is now a pariah. However, it’s clear he still has the support of at least two of his TV family members. Will the whole “Cosby” family come out with a statement?
