Niecy Nash can thank her role as a geriatric nurse in HBO’s Getting On for her newest gig on Fox’s The Mindy Project…as a doctor who happens to be gay.
“The producers of the show gave me a call,” Nash told us from the “Mindy” show’s set. “And we spent so much time talking about them being fans of Getting On. And I was like, ‘Okay,’ like, ‘Thank you, and I love you back, but why did you call me?’”
The producers informed her about the recurring role of Dr. Jean Fishman, a no-nonsense Bostonian who becomes the new chief of Shulman & Associates’ admitting hospital. They told Niecy the part was written with her in mind.
“Then they told me that the character was a lesbian, and I said, ‘You do know in real life I like boys though, right?’
And they were like, ‘Yes, but we just think your personality will be great at it,’ and I was like, ‘Yes. Please and thank you. Let’s do it.’ And it’s been wonderful,” said Nash. “They really treat you like a family around here.”
Below, Niecy reveals her husband’s reaction upon learning she would play a lesbian on “Mindy”:
The Mindy Project airs Tuesdays at 9:30 p.m. on FOX. Watch a clip of Niecy here.
