LOS ANGELES (AP) — Actress Daniele Watts, who suggested she was detained by police because of racial profiling after she was found in a parked car with her boyfriend, was charged Tuesday with lewd conduct.

Watts, 28, and her boyfriend Brian Lucas, 43, were each charged with a single misdemeanor count that carries a potential sentence of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine, said Frank Mateljan, spokesman for the city attorney’s office.

An email sent to Watts’ agent, Justin Baxter, and another email sent to Lucas, a chef, through his website were not immediately returned.

Both remained free pending their Nov. 13 arraignment, Mateljan said.

Watts, who appeared in the movie Django Unchained, was briefly handcuffed last month after police said she refused to provide identification to an officer investigating a report of lewd conduct in a parked Mercedes in Studio City.

Watts said she and Lucas were just kissing.

The incident went viral after Watts and Lucas claimed on their Facebook pages that the detention reflected racial profiling.

Lucas, who is white, told KCBS-TV in a joint interview with Watts that he suspected the officer mistook the black actress for a prostitute “because he was asking me questions like, ‘Who is she? How do you know her? Are you together?'”

Police said they followed proper protocol while investigating the 911 call and local civil rights activists demanded that Watts apologize for suggesting race played a role in the confrontation.

Earl Ofari Hutchinson, who initially rallied behind the actress, said she “cried wolf.”

“We take racial profiling very seriously,” he told reporters last month. “It’s not a play thing. It’s not trivial.”

    Better choice for shopping for less, a safe 50 to 90 Percent discounts? >>W w w, glazeideaC0M

most of us are unaware of the almost incredible deals we can get from these sites I verified with BBB and was told that it was nice. How can the gift cards, laptops, cameras and all sorts of goodies that we all want for 50-90% discount to sell, I do not know, I know I bought my son a iÞad for less than $100 and my husband a lowes $250 gift certificate for$ 48. You will never think about shopping anyplace else?..

  2. Sorry but that is NOT racism. When you act like you are sexually engaging on the streets (even in your car), it is against the LAW. I agree with smdh, she is just plain stupid. Some people need to go back a learn the word racism and what is racist.

Let me be clear, I’m not defending police officers. However, most of the stops, arrests, etc…are valid. Why are they in a parked car getting their “freak on”? They were in a mercedes, they don’t have money for a hotel? Ridiculous!

    • you can defend if the officers did what was right by law. She and her man was WRONG according to law. Also, I would like to know, why did they do that in public? why not go somewhere private.

  4. yeah, those pictures that were taken from the office across the street didn’t look like just kissing to me. they were getting their freak on in broad daylight for everyone to see. that didn’t appear to be “racial profiling” to me…she was just plain stupid.
