I find myself in the midst of an important, albeit, uncomfortable cycle. It’s one that has reoccurred for as long as I can remember. The only difference, now, is awareness of the fact that the only way I can get out of it is by staying in it. Yes, that’s right: the only way to end a cycle is by seeing it to its end.
How often do we find ourselves exhibiting similar patterns of behavior that get us into trouble? We say, “I’ll never do that again,” until we’re back in the same situation. Our intent is usually to avoid the temptation of repeating past mistakes, knowing they will only bring dissatisfaction. But then all of sudden, we’re right where we started – examples of this could be in regards to an addiction, unhealthy relationship or financial hardship.
History (be it personal or collective) repeats itself when important lessons aren’t learned. While some lessons are easier to learn than others, it’s the harder ones we resist. Such resistance is exactly why certain lessons come up again and again. Our only choice during the next round, then, is to either fight it or face it; the latter option can make a world of difference.
