One fact about the vagina that many people aren’t aware of is that the vagina is a collapsed muscle and like any other muscle in the body, the vagina has to be worked out in order to maintain strength, shape and health.  Kegel exercises are recommended by health care professionals and sex therapists/coaches to women in order to build up the muscles within the pelvis and the vagina. There are several tools, including kegel balls and vaginal weights, that help facilitate the proper movement needed to build up these hidden muscles. Another tool that many are becoming aware of is yoni eggs, vaginal weights crafted from gemstones that are shaped in an egg form.

Eggs have been used in eastern cultures for centuries to bring healing to the vagina and to enhance sexual performance by not only strengthening the vaginal muscles, but by bringing more moisture to the vagina as well as producing stronger orgasms.

Here are answers to a few common questions that first timers have about these eggs.

What does yoni mean?

Yoni is the Sanskrit word for the vagina meaning “sacred place”.  This word is often used in eastern cultures and Taoist tradition when referring to the vagina.

What size do these eggs come in?

Yoni eggs are typically sold in small, medium and large sizes.  The average person would use a medium size egg, as a small egg may be too small to feel within the vagina and one must feel the weight in order to contract the muscles to keep it in place.  Large yoni eggs are good for women who have had children.

How do I insert the egg?

For many women, inserting anything into the vagina can be intimidating because of the thought of something getting lost beyond the cervix or stuck beyond retrieval. However, there is no need to worry about the yoni egg getting stuck or lost within the vagina.  The egg will eventually travel down the vaginal canal, as it will want to fall out because of its weighted nature.  To insert, you must first be in a relaxed state. While laying down or with one leg propped up on the edge of the bathtub or on the edge of a bed, chair or another piece of furniture that is sturdy, hold the yoni egg with the finger tips and slowly ease it into the vagina using  the tip of the middle finger. Once it is past the opening of the vagina, the vaginal walls will naturally pull the egg into place. At this point, it will be your job to prevent it from slipping out.  Contracting the muscles to keep the egg in place is what will strengthen the vagina.
