Janelle Monae‘s transition to the big screen has been just as smooth as her melodic moves on stage. The pint-sized beauty stars in two of the year’s most anticipated films, Hidden Figures and Moonlight. She talks to the Tom Joyner Morning Show about her role in the Barry Jenkins directed film and why this story is so important.

“When I read the script I had a strong reaction…it moved me to tears. I just thought, finally we’re going to have a story dealing with black masculinity. To see a coming of age story about a young boy who is trying to find himself,” Monae said. “I had a parent that struggled with crack addiction. It was important that they told an authentic story. I hope it will gain more empathy.”

Moonlight is in theaters in New York and Los Angeles, Friday October 21st and nationally November 4th.
