Kayden Coleman, a 29-year-old transgender man who had been taking testosterone shots for years thought he had gotten out of shape and that it was time for him to hit the nearest gym. But he was wrong; what he had gotten…was pregnant.

Coleman had lived life as a man for nearly 10 years, and was about to have a doubly mastectomy at this stage of an FTM transition, but after several pregnancy tests (he kept thinking were wrong) it was a trip to the doctors office that confirmed it.

Coleman was 21 weeks pregnant.

The symptoms had been there all along. The frequent visits to the restroom, the lack of energy, and the growing belly. But what man — even a transitioning one — would have thought it was a pregnancy.

Reports say that Coleman saw his nose getting wider after viewing pictures of himself on Instagram. In addition to all these symptoms, he was also experiencing back pain. He asked his then-boyfriend, now-husband, Elijah to give him a back massage.

According to the Daily Mail, Coleman said, “It felt like there was a pillow under my stomach but there was no pillow.” Then he joked with his partner that he should get a pregnancy test.

But the “joke” was on them: It came back positive.

The couple’s daughter Azaelia is now 22 months old.

But all was not easy in the hospital. Coleman said although he was treated well by the medical staff, he eventually became fed up with medical students coming in to see him.

“It got to the point where I had to put my foot down and demand a C-section,” he said.

Kayden is now planning a hysterectomy but he and Elijah could not be happier to have Azaelia in their lives. She is being raised by two fathers that she calls “Daddy” (Kayden) and “Poppy” (Elijah). The parents say they will tell their daughter the full story in another three years. “Kids are a lot more understanding and receptive than adults,” says Coleman. “But I don’t plan on making a big deal out of it. I’ve never made a big deal out of it when telling anyone, because to me it’s not a big deal. As long as Azaelia is loved and cared for, I doubt she’ll care,” he says.

Speaking about his daughter, Coleman said: “I couldn’t imagine, and don’t want to imagine, life without her. She is amazing.”
