The season finale of Unsung airs tonight and Kid N’ Play are the subject. The legendary hip-hop duo are celebrating the 25th anniversary of their classic movie House Party which also starred then new faces Martin Lawrence and Tisha Campbell.

Kid N’Play are among the few hip-hop acts that have been on Unsung and as one of hip-hop’s pioneering duos, they had a huge impact on the musical genre. Christopher “Kid” Reid and Chris “Play” Martin have also enjoyed an enduring 25-year friendship. They enjoyed doing the documentary which took them, literally, down memory lane. The two lived around the corner from each other growing up in East Elmhurst, Queens.

“They really put a lot into it. I’m really impressed with a budget. We did a lot of filming in L.A. and then we went to New York and went and visited our old stomping grounds,” Martin said. “We visited the house and the guy who owns the house who still owns it, that was used in House Party.”

As far as their signature dance moves, Kid N Play says that they were inspired in part by The Nicholas Brothers, the famous dancers from the 20’s who also inspired folks like classic movie star/dancer Fred Astaire and actor/dancer Gregory Hines

“We did a poster similar to a lot of [the Nicholas Brothers’] moves,” says Martin. “It was really borne of of urgency because when it was time to hit the road, Kid and I didn’t have a budget to bring dancers with us, so it we had to come up with some moves we could do and not have any dancers to rely on. A big shoutout to Hi-Hat, who choreographs for Missy Elliot and Li’l Bit, among all the other dancers that helped us.”

Martin admits they stole the moves, because they are basically the Charleston, but with two people doing the Charleston in front of the other.

“If you steal it with a smile, they forget you stole it,” says Reid.

As far as a House Party sequel, Martin says there have been some offers, but now they are casted as the fathers.

“I’ve always wanted Kid and I do to remake of Uptown Saturday Night,” says Martin. “It’s age appropriate.”

Martin is currently producing a documentary of the famed FAMU band, the Marching 100 that Tom Joyner is in, so look out for that.
