Dear Tom,

My son Jhajuan is a 14 year-old, African American male who is interested in attending the advance program for young scholars (advance) at northwestern state in Natchitoches, Louisiana. It is a three-week intense and demanding program for gifted students that provides an entire year’s worth of high school or a semester of college-level material. Jhajuan is interested in taking their high school chemistry course.

It breaks my heart that I am struggling to come up with enough money for him to go to the program. He was given a partial scholarship to attend and I must come up with the substantial remaining balance by the end of May. I have three other small children at home and I only get paid once a month. Last month, I paid on his balance and by doing so it caused me get behind on my other monthly obligations.

My son is also in need of a laptop and printer, so he can complete his classwork for school at home. Our current computer is riddled with multiple viruses and our printer is no longer working. I want to support my son’s love for education and to give him the tools he needs to be successful, but I cannot. Tom, it is my Christmas wish to ask for your help to pay the remaining balance on his summer course and grant him a laptop and printer.
