Songstress Tamia could be on either R&B Divas or Basketball Wives. After all, she was a hitmaker in the 90’s and 2000’s with songs like “Stranger In My House,” “I’m So Into You” and her sultry duet with Eric Benet “Spend My Life With You.” And for the last 15 years, she’s been married to former NBA player Grant Hill with whom she has two daughters.

But Tamia, a Canadian native who grew up near Detroit, hasn’t gone the reality route yet. The one-time Grammy nominee is still performing and making music.

After a recent performance, Singersroom.com caught up with Tamia to chat about her busy schedule as a wife and mom, the secret to success in the industry, living with multiple sclerosis, and her upcoming projects.

On Her Longevity in the Industry:

I don’t know if there’s a formula for longevity in the business. I’m just happy to be here. I started when I was 17, well I’m not 17 anymore, but I’m just happy to continue do music that I love and I’m just inspired by it.

On Balancing Motherhood and Marriage:

Oh, it’s a juggling act. Sometimes you just drop the ball, but you pick it up and you start where you left off.

On Her Biggest Musical Influences:

I love amazing singers, from Whitney Houston, to Chaka Khan, Gladys Knight, Valerie Simpson, CeCe Winans, Yolanda Adams, I mean those are the women that I studied. All are very different vocally, but there’s something in that voice that drew me to them. That’s what I love about music, it’s heart to heart connection and you feel like they’re singing to you.

On Living With Multiple Sclerosis:

I’m not shy or ashamed to talk about MS, I’m currently in remission. I’m just thankful and blessed that I can still do the things I love to do, a wife, mom, singer, performer, and a business woman.

On Her Upcoming Projects:

We’re going to continue to do more shows, live shows and get back in the studio. Don’t want to take too long anymore between albums.

On Her Favorite Song She’s Recorded:

Umm, “Beautiful Surprise,” certainly. You know the great thing about putting out records, songs, albums, or whatever you want to call it or songs you love is that if you get to this point where you have to sing an hour and forty minutes, you still love the music.

That’s what it’s about. At the end of the day, it’s about being proud of what you put out and I am. I just love performing my songs for my fans.
