Derek Smith  a senior,  from Chesapeake, Virginia has been named this week’s Tom Joyner Foundation “Hercules Scholar”.  At Norfolk State University Derek  is majoring in History  and is recognized as an honor student with a 3.69 GPA . He plans to be a future attorney  working for corporate companies , which will allow him to set an example of leadership and excellence.

Derek is very involved on campus with SGA and he also helps serve the community by being a regular donor to the Red Cross. He mentions that his  inspiration comes from his Father Arthur Smith, and his mother Dr. Karen Rush. Derek says that “Coming to NSU has opened me up to many opportunities that I would have never expected”.

The Norfolk State University is located in Norfolk, Va., has 6,728 students, offering more than 50 degree programs at the undergraduate, master’s and doctoral levels. On its 134-acre campus, there are 35 buildings, including state-of-the-art technology centers, a 28,000-seat football stadium and an 8,000-seat basketball arena.

The Hercules Scholarship is named after Joyner’s father, the late Hercules Joyner, who was a strong supporter of higher education. To be a candidate for the scholarship, students must be male, attend a Foundation “School of the Month”, have a grade point average of at least 3.5, and be a campus leader involved in the community with a career goal toward making a difference in the quality of life for his race. The scholars each receive a scholarship grant of $1,500 that is paid directly to their school to help offset their college expenses.
