Angelo Grayson Smith, Jr. has reportedly confessed to the murder of his girlfriend Bianca Tanner, the Charlotte schoolteacher who’d been missing since June 7. On the night she disappeared, Smith told police she was intoxicated and the couple argued, but Tanner’s 3-year-old son told police that he’d witnessed Tanner being hit by Smith.

Smith was arrested in Illinois for contributing to the delinquency of a minor as he left Tanner’s son alone that night. In Illinois, he said that he’d fled Charlotte to be with family because he felt “threatened.”

Smith was re-arrested once what is believed to be Tanner’s remains was found in Charlotte’s Steele Creek neighborhood. He was captured in a Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity T-shirt and police are saying that Smith’s fraternity brother led them to the remains.

In a press conference last week, Charlotte/Mecklenburg police confirmed that the discovery was made after a “cooperating witness” provided them with information.

Smith told reporters, when asked if he had a message for Tanner’s family, that he was “Sorry.”

Tanner’s family had been searching for Tanner for weeks, even hiring a private detective and setting up a Facebook page.

On that page, a post from the family reads:

Thank you all for your continued prayers and support. The family asks for privacy as they try to deal with this senseless tragedy. GOD is a healer and they stand firm in their beliefs that GOD will help them overcome this too!

Tanner’s sister Cerise Richardson, said the family obviously hoped for a better outcome. “This is the longest we’ve ever been apart that we’re not talking so. It’s hard,” Richardson said.

Smith will be arraigned Monday.
