A debate over an anti-abortion bill in Alabama quickly turned controversial, after one Democrat said white Republican lawmakers would force their kids to abort babies with Black fathers, AL.com reports.
The Alabama House discussion Tuesday became heated when Republican Rep. Mary Sue McClurkin, who sponsored the bill, juxtaposed her efforts to Brown v. the Board of Education, the legislation that ruled racial segregation in schools unconstitutional.
That set Montgomery Rep. Alvin Holmes off. ”Ninety-nine percent of the all of the white people in here are going to raise their hand that they are against abortion,” Holmes, who is African-American, commented. ”On the other hand, 99 percent of the whites who are sitting in here now, if their daughter got pregnant by a black man, they are going to make their daughter have an abortion.”
“You know the truth sometimes hurts,” he added. “You will never admit it. You know that and I know that.”
During his inflammatory speech, Holmes turned to an unnamed white female representative, asking her if she would be okay with her child having an interracial baby.
