GRAMBLING, La. (AP) – Grambling State has fired head football coach Doug Williams after the team lost its first two games of the season.

The university announced Wednesday that it has bought out the remainder of the former NFL quarterback’s contract.

Running backs coach George Ragsdale is taking over as interim head coach.

Grambling had a 1-10 record in 2012 under the 58-year-old Williams, a Zachary native who served two stints as the team’s head coach.

Williams’ first stint as Grambling’s head coach lasted from 1998 to 2003. He returned to the school in 2011.

During his NFL career, Williams led the Washington Washington Football Team to a Super Bowl victory in 1988.
