  • WASHINGTON (AP) — About 47 million Americans received food stamps last year, but only a relative few are required to work or look for a job as a condition of receiving the aid.

Now, House Republicans are considering whether the work requirement should be strengthened as they seek cuts to the $80 billion-a-year program, which has doubled in cost over the last five years.

A small group of GOP lawmakers is expected to meet Wednesday to discuss trimming the program, now called the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP. It is unclear whether they will be able to agree on an approach before Congress leaves town for its August recess.

    1. The lax immigration policy is just as much the culprit in the increase in foodstamp usage as the lack of jobs. Already Americans are struggling to find work, yet the border flood gates are open to any and all who would enter illegally and “legally” claim hold to all government services, further driving up debt. Go figure. This is not logical on any level. Together with everything else that is plaguing us, these things are causing America to slowly implode. We are going the way of Rome. Because we will not heed the lessons of the past, we are doomed to repeat them. We don’t need an outside enemy to annihilate us — we’re doing it ourselves.

    3. Thank you Rayar. President Obama gets blame again for lack of jobs. Blame the pubs for the lack of jobs,They like it this way. They are still mad about the election. LOL

    4. If the Anointed King aka: Hope and Change knew what he was doing there would be jobs and this wouldn’t be the largest increase in food stamp recipients in history Blacks have suffered more under
Mr. “Change we can believe” in than any other. ask the people of Detroit how that hopie changie thing is working out for them. But the Democratic leadership will just say blame the Repubs they know the intellectually void slaves to the Dems will still follow along

      • Such a dumba$$…Detroit was in trouble way before the POTUS was ever in office…..Get your facts straight before pushing your lies.

        • Your right it was. and then came king Obama who criticized those who said Detroit should go bankrupt
Then he followed by saying I will not let that happen then ran for reelection with “look I saved Detroit”
Well ok so I didn’t, it was like those “shovel ready jobs that weren’t so shovel ready.. Actually you’re a prime example of that city’s demise blind apathy amongst the people …decades of democratic big government, high taxes
Poor schools plenty of government hand outs to keep the people voting Democrat and now there’s
Nothing left to give no police ,no fire high crime low hope, California’s next

    5. If there was 47 million new jobs available, Americans would not need SNAP. Children don’t work and should not be punished with an empty belly because there are not enough jobs in the USA.
