  • DETROIT (AP) — Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was convicted Monday of corruption charges, ensuring a return to prison for a man once among the nation’s youngest big-city leaders.

Jurors convicted Kilpatrick of a raft of crimes, including a racketeering conspiracy charge. He was portrayed during a five-month trial as an unscrupulous politician who took bribes, rigged contracts and lived far beyond his means while in office until fall 2008.

Prosecutors said Kilpatrick ran a “private profit machine” out of Detroit’s City Hall. The government presented evidence to show he got a share of the spoils after ensuring that Bobby Ferguson’s excavating company was awarded millions in work from the water department.

Business owners said they were forced to hire Ferguson as a subcontractor or risk losing city contracts. Separately, fundraiser Emma Bell said she gave Kilpatrick more than $200,000 as his personal cut of political donations, pulling cash from her bra during private meetings. A high-ranking aide, Derrick Miller, told jurors that he often was the middle man, passing bribes from others.

Internal Revenue Service agents said Kilpatrick spent $840,000 beyond his mayoral salary.

Ferguson, Kilpatrick’s pal, was also convicted of a racketeering conspiracy charge. The jury could not reach a verdict on the same charge for Kilpatrick’s father, Bernard Kilpatrick, but convicted him of submitting a false tax return.

    1. Its really a shame how he took it upon his-self, to take money and bribes from the city after all detroit had been through why would he mess up a good thing he had going on, his mother tried to explain to him about being a politician how to take care of business. He had been taught well, look at all the years Carolyn cheeks spent in office. SHe didn’t have to become corrupt. its really awful for her and his family. but he could have been a powerful black man. but he messed it up for-himself. we are always sabotaging ourselves.

    3. When you comment on here please comment in standard English and not Ghetto Jibberish. If you can’t express yourself in the standard English language so others reading your comment (s) can understand your point of view then you are NOT qualified to offer a comment here. Just remember your ghetto vernacular is offensive to people who speak English.

    4. I’m from detroit and I was proud to have a black mayor. at the time he was voted in, the youngest elected official, it was a great moment. but now look at what happened. I was very disappointed
to see him fall like he did. It was very embrassing for his family and his wife and his children, but men
are corrupted in any state or city. this has nothing to do with race, him and Christine committed perjury on the stand. I watched the trial while sitting in my Detroit Apartment. and the interview him and his wife did. It was just the beginning at that time. but I watched him fall on his own decisions
and the choices he made. He didn’t make very good choices, he thought he was above the law, and his arrogance got in the way. and his Ego became to much for himself to handle. but his whole family had to suffer all this. and his father just as guilty as he is. Kawame had family members on the payroll and all they had to do was show up to work. Every state has a corrupted government we have one now. look at what is happening now. he still is arrogant and shellfish and not coming to knowledge of the truth. He still won’t own up to what he has done. and what he did to the city of Detroit MIchigan. I just hope he will learn from his mistakes and stop pointing his finger at everyone else, it was a horrible fall I watched in dis-belief as both of them his father and himself and his family cousins mother suffered this terrible fall. and the cheating he did with His chief of staff all those sexual e-mails and spending money to travel with his mistress. it was just terrible. but every man should learn a valuable lesson that no man is exempt from corruption its happening everywhere now
but they have to realize that they have to pay for what they did. that is the bottom line. You have to account for your mistakes and choices you have to pay a price and he has paid dearly but was it all worth it.. that is what he should be asking himself.(it was just a shame) how he ruined his own career.

    5. has everthing to due with race (dumbass bloggers)…… same as everthing else thats going on in Michigan! you dumbasses dont have a clue……next, they’ll be “NO Knocking for YOU! “… get a grip , Oreoes

    6. The saddest thing is why are so many Blacks trying to be crooks like these white folks..It was all ready hard for blacks to be elected and then when you do all you can do is become crooks..The love of MONEY is the root to all EVIL..Yall havent learned that yet!I dont feel sorry for this man and Jessie Jackson either, and his wife…And we wonder why we or some many are still at the bottom..My advise stop trying to be money hungry and do what you were hired to do..Only smart people would never have there hand in the white worlds cookie jar…Ask martha steward and Rita cronwell in DIXON 20 years is a long time for messing with others money..

    8. Some Detroiters are actually STILL supporting him and speaking up for him, justifying his actions. So I guess the jury was racist and out to get him as well? He committed crimes and should be punished, FLAT OUT!!!

    9. NO MATTER WHO THE COG IS , WHEN U ARE IN THE MACHINE U CAN ONLY TURN OR SERVE ONE PURPOSE AND THAT IS TO FUTHER THE MACHINES OPERATION. THE SAME GOES FOR ANY POLITICAL POSITION. IT IS NOT GOVERMENT IT IS POLITICS.
