  • Newark, NJ mayor Cory Booker is about to go on food stamps for one month just to prove a point to one of his Twitter followers, who will join him in the challenge with the belief that no family should be “too poor to afford breakfast” if they are receiving government assistance.

Mayor Booker is well known for tweeting out inspirational quotes or little nuggets of wisdom throughout the day – but one in particular on Sunday didn’t sit well with a follower who’s a self-described “Daughter of the American Revolution (DAR), fighting against any and all forms of socialism/communism.”

The quote tweeted by Booker,  “‘An imbalance between rich and poor is the oldest and most fatal ailment of all republics” Plutarch ancient Greek historian (c. 46 – 120 CE),” sparked the following exchange:

"@CoryBooker why is there a family today that is "too poor to afford breakfast"? are they not already receiving food stamps?"

    Booker replied:
" Lets you and I try to live on food stamps in New Jersey (high cost of living) and feed a family for a week or month. U game?"

The two agreed to the challenge, when a referee offer quickly surfaced from the University of Bridgeport, which is calling it the “UB SNAP Food Challenge,” to be held during the first week of December.

"@CoryBooker @mwadenc UB is doing food stamp challenge 12/2-9. We can send you our rules & we'll referee."
