In a world that can often be challenging and uncertain, the role of a father—both earthly and heavenly—offers a guiding light. Russell Wilson’s recent heartfelt message to his stepson, Future, beautifully illustrates the joy and pride that comes from seeing a child thrive.

“I’m full of joy! Nothing better than seeing you smile,” he wrote on Instagram, celebrating Future’s productive summer as a ball boy for the Steelers.

This sentiment echoes the love our Heavenly Father feels for us, His children.

In Matthew 3:17, God expresses this love when He declares, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” Just as Wilson finds joy in his stepson’s growth, our Father in heaven delights in our successes, cheering us on as we navigate the path of life. 

Wilson’s encouragement to his son, “There is nothing you can’t do with Jesus on your side,” serves as a powerful reminder of the strength and hope we find in our relationship with Christ. Philippians 4:13 tells us, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” As fathers, this is the message we are called to impart to our children—that with faith, determination, and Jesus walking beside them, there is no challenge too great and no obstacle too insurmountable. Wilson’s role as a father, stepping in to guide and nurture, reflects the transformative love that God calls all fathers to embody.

As a father myself, I have been focusing more on making sure my daughter is aware of my presence and love toward her, even though we are not always together. I remember moments where I felt insufficient because of the geographical distance between my daughter and me, but God reminded me of the relationship I have with Him. Even though I can’t physically see or touch Him, the evidence of His love, provision, and providence over me is all around me! Seeing fathers like Russell express their gratitude for their children becoming the person they aim to be offers me a strong dose of encouragement.

Today, I encourage every father to take a moment to speak life into your children’s dreams. Pray with them, affirm who they are and who they are becoming. Use the spiritual tools God has given us—prayer, scripture, and words of affirmation—to guide them. Remind them that with Jesus on their side, there is nothing they cannot achieve.

Fathers, as you walk alongside your children, just as our Heavenly Father walks with us, remember to keep them “as the apple of your eye,” shielding them with love and guiding them with wisdom (Psalm 17:8). Together, you help lay the foundation for a future filled with faith, strength, and endless possibilities.
