I have a big toe that has a thick toenail and it always looks like it has fungus. It has been like this for years. What can I do? I have used everything over the counter to no avail.

I would recommend a consultation with a podiatrist to evaluate to see if it is indeed a fungus.  Typically they can do a biopsy of the nail in the office and let you know definitively if there is any type of organism affecting the nail.  At that point, they can prescribe a medication to help alleviate the fungus if it is a fungus.

I have diabetic neuropathy what else can I do besides medication?

Others thing you can do besides prescription medication to help with the symptoms of diabetic neuropathy include taking over-the-counter B12 which has been shown to help reduce that symptomatology, there may be also some benefit to physical therapy to help alleviate some of the symptomatology.

Doctor, I think I have Morton Neuroma. Can I do anything at home for that?

The only thing that you could do at home for a Morton’s neuroma, if that is indeed what it is, would be to take an oral anti-inflammatory.  However, if it is a Morton’s neuroma, it is going to be a recurring issue for which you would need to see your local podiatrist for more effective treatment.

Weight loss has caused excruciating foot pain. My doctor did no X-rays and prescribed steroids. Should I be concerned?

I would definitely be concerned. The most appropriate course of action would be to have x-rays done to see if there may be something else that is going on that could be associated with the weight loss.

Dr. Hunter, what can I do for dark hard toe nails, affected by a fungus?

The best thing to do for your fungal nails would be to see your local podiatrist and have them do a biopsy to assess if it is truly a fungus or something else.

I have an extensive shoe collection. Most are wedge heels. Will I be able to wear them again with plantar fasciitis?

Absolutely. Once you are treated for plantar fasciitis there is no reason for you not to be able to wear your wedge heels.  I would suggest senior podiatrist for assessment.

What type of cardio workout is best for someone with plantar fasciitis and what type of exercises should be avoided?

The best type of cardio workout for someone with plantar fasciitis would be cycling. I would avoid any direct impact exercises such as running or jogging. With cycling, you displace your weight and create less stress on your feet.

What type or brand of tennis shoe is recommended for working out with Plantar Fasciitis?

I would recommend Asics or new balance walking shoes.

Do you recommended a certain type of socks or over-the-counter orthotics?

With the evolution of sock technology there are different brands of socks that are available to help deal with plantar fasciitis.  I would recommend the socks that have the reinforced arch that is tight around that area to help support the plantar fascial band. With regard to the over-the-counter orthotics there are different types of inserts available there are specifically used to address plantar fasciitis.  I would recommend going to an insert store in having them dispense a pair for you.
