In a video released to the public, a rookie cop out of Virginia can be seen shooting an 18-year-old in the back as he tried to run away after a robbery according to The Virginia Pilot.

Recorded on an officer body cam on October 29, 2017 officer Jeremy Durocher responded to a report of a burglary where he found Deontrace Ward allegedly committing the crime of theft.

Gun drawn and ready, Durocher immediately fires shots at Ward as soon as he sees him yelling, “He has a gun.” As Ward is being handcuffed Durocher can be heard saying Ward waved a gun at him as he pursued him.

As cops were on top of Ward he yelled,”I can’t breathe,” when a female officer responded, “You’ll be fine.” Another female officer comes and takes Durocher’s sidearm away from him explaining that she needed to do so. Only for a male officer to take the gun from her saying, “he’s got to have one,” as he gave it to Durocher.

According to police, they found a .45 caliber gun in Ward’s pants. Ward says that although he had a gun on him, he did not point it at the officer during the incident. “I was just pretty much trying to get away. Showing no aggression,” said Ward.

Police would not release the video because of their investigation, however, Ward’s attorney received a copy in April and released it to the public. Since the October 2017 incident, Ward has been in jail and will be in court on May 1 for charges of, “armed burglary, assault of a police officer and possession of a weapon by a felon.”
