Fibroids are noncancerous tumors that grow in the womb. Causing severe pain and infertility problems, African-American women are three times more likely to get it.
Jacque Reid goes Inside Her Story with PaSean Wilson-Ashley about her film called The F-Word, a documentary about fibroids in Black women.
“I guess around 14 years ago the first doctor that I went to told me not to worry about it,” explained Wilson-Ashley. It was her second doctor that gave her hard news.
“‘You have fibroids you need a hysterectomy,'” said Wilson-Ashley’s doctor. “I told her I was not having a hysterectomy…I cried so hard. I started doing a lot of holistic treatment.”
However, one doctor told her that they could remove her fibroids and leave her uterus alone using a myomectomy surgery. The question becomes why aren’t more doctors recommending this.
“They’re (doctors) trained it’s how we have to cure and that any other treatment is a band-aid,” explained Wilson-Ashley. “Because it doesn’t get to the root cause of why a woman has fibroids it will return.”
