In a series of tweets on Tuesday, Donald Trump confirmed that he did in fact disclose information regarding ISIS intel with Russian senior officials during a White House visit last week.
Trump took to his favorite outlet–Twitter, to state that as commander-in-chief, he was within his rights.
“As President I wanted to share with Russia (at an openly scheduled W.H. meeting) which I have the absolute right to do, facts pertaining to terrorism and airline flight safety, Humanitarian reasons, plus I want Russia to greatly step up their fight against ISIS & terrorism,” he tweeted.
On Monday, The Washington Post first reported the explosive details that Trump leaked ISIS information with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Ambassador Sergey Kislyak when they visited the White House on May 10. Government officials were taken aback by the revelation, concerned that although Trump did not share the information’s source, it would not be difficult for Russian officials to uncover.
Trump’s tweets contradict what National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster said on Monday when he refuted the Post’s report to a room full of reporters.
“At no time were intelligence sources or methods discussed and the President did not disclose any military operations that weren’t already publicly known,” McMaster said. “I was in the room. It didn’t happen.”
The fallout comes amid Trump’s controversial decision to fire former FBI Director James Comey. During the 2016 election, Trump repeatedly called out Hillary Clinton for storing classified information on a private email server.
