More than 500 mourners gathered on Tuesday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Whites Creek, Tennessee, to say their final farewells to 11-year-old Timea Lashay Batts, The Tennessean reports.

All eyes were on her father – who claimed he accidentally killed her on Aug. 8 – when he got up to speak at the memorial service.

The newspaper said Timea’s father, Timothy Batts, was released from jail on Friday after posting bond. The grieving man read a poem he wrote:

“I wish it was a nightmare, and I can awake now but it’s all too real. Since the day you were born, I never pictured life without you. I hear you saying, ‘I’m at a better place’ but I’d give anything for another chance to see your smiling face. I love you forever until we meet again.”

He told the assembled family and friends that he cries every day for Timea.

Batts, 29, is charged with reckless homicide, tampering with evidence, false reporting, and possessing a firearm as a felon. Investigators were bewildered by his story that someone shot his daughter as she walked home from the school bus stop. But detectives found evidence that the shooting occurred inside the family’s home in Hendersonville.

He then told the police he thought his daughter was an intruder entering the home as he slept. However, a surveillance video showed him awake and on the phone minutes before the shooting, The Tennessean said.

Batts asked God for forgiveness. “When I can’t breathe no more, heaven please let me in,” he prayed. The father talked about seeing Timea again in heaven.

  1. Look at your legal system, he never should have had a gun. Where was his probation officer and why did he have this child and where is the mother??? Don’t let this be another Lisa Bonet case.

I think he was under the influence of some powerful illegal drug that caused him to be paranoid. My concerns are: where is Timea’s mother, have any family members spoken out, is he employed and how was he able to secure bail after the police investigation proved that he lied about the events that cause Timea’s death. I think most importantly that needs to be question is, what investigation procedures was used that allowed him to be able to make bail. I hope Timea’s case will be further investigated with due diligence that can bring some justice for her. We must remember that all felon’s are not violent but this does not apply to him. God bless Timea’s soul and God please let just be served swiftly.

Ohmygoodness. This is so darn sad. He is a felon with a gun who “accidentally” shoots and kills his daughter and is allowed to post bond? In addition to being a felon, he’s a liar too, where is this child’s mother? who are the people attending this funeral? Why is he forgiven so quickly by this family, are they really sure this was an accident? This child comes home from school the same time every day, wasn’t he expecting her? He is a CONVICTED FELON with an illegal gun, there should have been no bail. This is all kinds of wrong.

    • Something is really, really wrong here. Why is not in jail? He is a felon in possession of a firearm, killed his daughter and tried to cover it up with lies AND tried to blame on someone else. What possessed this family to let him within spitting distance of this baby’s funeral? It’s like he’s mocking them. What am I missing?

The real question is wth all they missing? sounds like common sense. These people clearly don’t have the sense God gave a tic-tac.
