Jussie Smollett won’t be the only one in his family to grace the small screen in 2016. His once better known sister Jurnee Smollet-Bell is headling a new show coming to WGN in early 2016. Underground tells the story of a slave escape in the 1800’s and co-stars Aldis Hodge (Straight Outta Compton, The Game’s original Derwin) Law and Order’s Christopher Meloni and several newcomers.
Will a story set in slavery’s past attract an audience? It remains to be seen but at an event this past summer, the stars of the show, including Smollett-Bell, said they were attracted by the possibilities of the show, which focuses on the attempts of a group of slaves to get to freedom using the Underground Railroad, thus the show’s title. Billed as an action show rather than a drama, expect the suspense to ramp up as the season goes on.
