The wife of MLB’s St. Louis Cardinals President Bill DeWitt is planning to pay for the funeral of a 9-year-old girl shot dead in Ferguson while doing her school work at home.

Both Jamyla Bolden and her mother were shot in their home Tuesday night, KSDK reports. Her mother was treated for a gunshot wound to her leg and released from the hospital. But the young child’s death still has the community reeling. Throughout the week, vigils and rallies have taken place in the Ferguson neighborhood not far from where Michael Brown Jr. was fatally shot by a former Ferguson police officer last year.

According to KSDK, Ira DeWitt heard the story of Jamyla’s death and “immediately knew what she wanted to do.”

“She was an honor student and she was doing her homework on her mother’s bed and it literally broke my heart,” said Ira of the moment she heard Jamyla’s story.  “And I have two children, and not only can I not imagine going through something like that, but then to worry about paying bills for your child’s funeral is like something that’s just so sad.”

Ira was hesitant to share her story of generosity.  She says this moment is not about her, but she’s also heartsick about the violence in our community. She says she hopes others in the community will show support and come forward to solve Jamyla’s murder.

Police are still searching for the suspect in the fatal shooting.
