The family of an unarmed Detroit Black woman – who was killed by a White homeowner on his porch in 2013 as she sought assistance after a car accident – has reached a settlement with the convicted killer for an undisclosed amount, according to The Huffington Post.

Theodore Wafer was convicted of second-degree murder and manslaughter last year in the death of 19-year-old Renisha McBride, and shortly after, her family’s attorney Gerald Thurswell filed a $10 million wrongful death lawsuit against him, writes the news outlet.

A judge signed off on the settlement Friday, Thurswell told The Huffington Post on Monday. Meanwhile, Wafer awaits a hearing on an appeal of his conviction.

Per The Huffington Post:

Wafer will pay Renisha’s parents, Monica McBride and Walter Ray Simmons, an amount that will not be disclosed under terms of a confidentiality agreement.

They were pleased with the settlement,” Thurswell said. “However, they both said that they would give all the money in the world to have their daughter back.”

Wafer is serving a 17-year prison sentence in the shooting death of McBride, which occurred after 4 a.m. on Nov. 2, 2013. The teen appeared on his porch in Dearborn Heights, Michigan, near her home in Detroit, seeking assistance after a car wreck, notes the report.

Wafer claimed during his trial that he thought multiple intruders were trying to break into his house, and fired his rifle at McBride through his screen door.

Wafer was convicted just days before Michael Brown was fatally shot by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri, sparking local protests that grew into the Black Lives Matter movement. Race was rarely mentioned during Wafer’s trial, but activists and commentators drew attention to racial dynamics of a system where a white homeowner feels threatened by, and shoots, an unarmed black woman. They pointed to McBride’s death to raise awareness about other ways in which black women’s lives are devalued.

At his sentencing last year, Wafer said McBride was “too young to leave this world” and that he will “carry that guilt and sorrow forever.”

While no amount of money can compensate for the family’s loss, we are glad the suit was settled.

Settlements are all well and good if the plaintiff ever receives the $$$.
Let’s not hold our breath to see if Ms. McBride’s killer makes good on this settlement.

Wafer received a mere slap on the wrist for viciously killing this young lady who came to his door seeking help. He should have received a LIFE sentence instead of only 17 yrs!!!!
