It’s no secret that Black women suffer disproportionately from obesity and other largely preventable illnesses. That’s where Toni Carey and Ashley Hicks come in. This dynamic duo are the founders of Black Girls Run, a national organization to help Black women help themselves get more fit and healthy.
By March 2011, Black Girls Run had over 60 clubs around the country helping Black women get into gear and get healthier. Now there are over 70 clubs nationwide with about 60,00 members.
Since then, they’ve been instrumental in helping previously sedentary women get across finish lines in everything from 5K races to marathons and triathlons.
Their motto: ‘Preserve the sexy’ – and that’s what they’ve ben credited to doing for thousands of women. They say they only have one rule – “No men,” so Black Girls Run is open to all.
Black Girls Run was one of the many fitness sessions representing on the 2015 Fantastic Voyage presented by Ford.
