Krista and Jami Contreras are a married lesbian couple with an adorable baby girl. Six days after she was born, back in October, they had an appointment with a selected pediatrician from Eastlake Pediatrics. But when they waited for Dr. Vesna Roi in her room, another doctor came in her place, while shockingly stating that after “much prayer” Dr. Roi wouldn’t be assisting them because of their sexual orientation. Say what?!
The Contreras felt humiliated as they made their way out of the office. It be another five months before they were comfortable enough to inform local media, such as the Detroit Free Press about Dr. Roi’s decision. The couple looked deeper into the hurtful incident and used their pain to bring awareness to the prejudice LGBTQi parents endure: “People need to know. If I was going to a pediatrician that thought that, I wouldn’t support that. If they were discriminating against anyone, I would want to know. I wouldn’t want to support that. Doctor, dentist, whoever is doing it. We just want people to know that this is happening to families. And it’s not some far-fetched ideas, that are really scare tactics. This is actually happening.”
Roi later apologized to the family, sending them a hand-written letter. Too bad her olive branch still felt a tad prickly:
“Dear Jami & Krista, I am writing this letter of apology as I feel that it is important and necessary. I never meant to hurt either of you. After much prayer following your prenatal (visit), I felt that I would not be able to develop the personal patient doctor relationship that I normally do with my patients.”
When the Free Press contacted Roi for further comment, she said because of the federal HIPPA law, not much else could be said from her end. She did however try to clear her reputation. “My life is taking care of the babies. I love my families, my patients. I love my kids. And I have become very close with all my patients.”
Dr. Roi denied an infant because her parents are gay. We’re going to have to pass Dr. Roi a slice of humble–no–make it humanity pie. Dr. Roi not only hurt the parents, but insulted the child. What if she was sick? Or the parents needed to be aware of specific allergens? We know they are other pediatricians and every doctor is entitled to disagree with how others “live their lives,” but maybe such high-strung opinions should be left out the workplace? Also, this could’ve been a great opportunity to get to know a lesbian couple and for Dr. Roi to see that the prejudice she had towards them really wasn’t worth it.
