He also worked with the New Jersey prison system in its Cell Block Theater Program in the ’70’s. Gordone eventually joined the faculty of Texas A&M University where he taught English and theater.
Gordone died of lung cancer in November 1995. At the time of his death, he was survived by his longtime partner Susan Kouyomjian; two daughters, Judy McGee of Marino Valley, Calif., and Leah-Carla Gordone of Harlem; two sons, David Gordone and Stephen Gordon of Glendale, Calif., and nine grandchildren.
The Texas A&M Creative Writing Program established The Charles Gordone Awards to honor his legacy. It offers cash prizes each spring in poetry and in prose to an undergraduate and graduate student.
