Roland Martin talks to Ed Lewis, one of the men behind the iconic magazine Essence and author of ‘The Man From Essence’ about starting the magazine with a group of other men and Hugh Hefner’s surprising financial investment.
“At the beginning we named the magazine ‘Sapphire’ but we spoke to a lot of black women and they said, “boy are you crazy”. So we changed the name to Essence. It represents substance and strength,” Lewis said.
