There was a time when you’d get excited about announcing a new Kanye West release. Now, it’s about announcing a new Kanye rant. The latest comes from a deposition in a now settled case where West was alleged to have attacked a paparazzo at the airport last July. (West took a plea deal that included anger management and 250 hours of community service.)
In the deposition, obtained, of course, by TMZ.com, Kanye is obviously annoyed by the lawyer questioning him.
Nate Goldberg, the photographer’s lawyer is at the receiving end of another classic Kanye rant when he asks if he feels celebrities are stalked by paparazzi, specifically referencing Kanye’s song “Flashing Lights,” which references his feelings about the paps. Goldberg specifically quotes these lyrics:”Till I get flashed by the paparazzi, damn, these ni**as got me.”
Kanye, being Kanye, objected to Goldberg’s reciting his own lyrics back to him, saying
“You have to ask for a hall pass. You can’t just say the ‘n’ word around me.” He then says, “It offends me because you’re a white person saying ‘ni**a.’”
Further provoked by the questioning, Kanye goes on to compare the civil rights struggle to celebrity’s problems with the media.
“I mean in the ’60s people used to hold up ‘Die N****r’ signs when my parents were in the sit-ins also.” When Goldberg apparently questions if this means Kanye is comparing celebrities to Blacks seeking freedom from oppressive laws and policies, Kanye says Yes. *Blank stare.*
“Yes, 100 … I equate it to discrimination. I equate it to inequalities.”
To further prove his point, Kanye expands, “We, as group of minorities here in L.A., as celebrities have to ban together to influence guys like this — guys trying to take the picture, guys trying to get the big win, guys trying to get the check.”
Hmmm. At some point, Kanye also told Golberg “I’m the smartest celebrity you’ve ever f—n dealt with. I’m not like Britney Spears.”
Ummmkayyyy. Should Britney sue for defamation? We’ll be really happy when the next we hear from Kanye is with some new music.
