Apple Sex Study

Science may have just proven why apples are the ‘forbidden fruit’.

Women who eat more apples may have better sex, suggests new research from Italy. The study, published in Archives of Gynecology and Obstetrics, analyzed 731 sexually active, healthy (no history of sexual disorder) Italian women between the ages of 18 and 43.

The group of women who consumed one to two apples a day scored higher on their Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) – a 19 question survey about their sexual activities – than those in the no apple group.

Eating more apples increased arousal, sexual function and lubrication, making their sexual experiences more pleasurable according to findings.

The reason? Phloridzin.

This phytoestrogen can be found in apples and is structurally similar to the females sex hormone estradiol, largely responsible for female arousal.

Similar to red wine and chocolate, researchers also reason apples may improve sexual function because they contain antioxidants and polyphenols that stimulate blood flow to the vagina.

“This study suggests a potential relationship between regular daily apple consumption and better sexuality in our young women population,” the researchers conclude.

More research needs to be done to determine if apples are a direct cause, but in the meantime, it definitely can’t hurt to get in that apple a day!
