When Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity hosts it’s centennial this year, there will be a very special guest. J. Anthony Brown is being honored as the Entertainer of the Year at the event, July 16-20 in Washington, D.C.
“J. is out there representing the men of Phi Beta Sigma Incorporated and we’re going to celebrate his achievements.,” says Phi Beta Sigma president Jonathan A. Mason. “Because you know he’s the backbone of the show. It takes a Phi Beta Sigma man to make it happen.”
The Sigmas will hold a four-day celebration including a step show, a golf tournament, a Family and Legacy breakfast, concerts with Syleena Johnson, Frankie Beverly and Maze, Dougie Fresh and Slick Rick, a Black Tie ball and the unveiling of a monument at Howard University, where the fraternity was founded by students n 1914.
Famous Sigmas include BET’s Dr. Bobby Jones, Harry Belafonte, Flex Alexnder, Bobby Seale, the founder of the Black Panther Party, Congressman John Lewis, Blair Underwood, Malik Yoba, NFL star Richard Sherman, as well as, of course, J. Anthony Brown. Mason says selecting Brown was easy.
“We had a whole list of interests for this opportunity,” Mason says jokingly of the Entertainer of the Year Award. “But some of them were in prison at the time. J. was available and his schedule was open so we decided to bring him to D.C.”
