Rapper/businessman 50 Cent has never been one to shy away from sharing his opinion. In a recent interview with MTV UK, 50 opened up about what he thought of Kanye West‘s sixth album “Yeezus.” If you ask 50 Cent, Kanye’s last offering wasn’t Hip-Hop at all.
When MTV UK spoke to the G-Unit leader about his opinion of Kanye West’s musical direction, he did admit that he still does listen to a lot of West’s earlier work, but “Yeezus” doesn’t get any spins because he doesn’t get it.
“He’s obviously a talent within our culture and is one of the driving forces of it, but some of that shit is weird to me. That last record, to be honest, I’m not playing it right now. I still play ‘Flashing Lights,’ ‘Gold Digger’ and that whole (College Dropout) project. But some of the new stuff is so creative and feels like he’s trying to create a whole new sound,” he explained.
50 Cent also cited EDM music as part of the reason Kanye’s album strayed from the traditional Hip-Hop sound fans have come to love him for.
“It sounds scrambled… radio is going to play dance music, EDM – you got a lot of stuff happening in music culture that’s influencing a lot of R&B music to that tempo. It doesn’t feel like Hip-Hop to me, it feels like a fusion of something else, like a weird combination of dance music sounds and stuff. It’s just him being an artist, you don’t have to agree with everything an artist does,” 50 Cent said. ” Like, I don’t have a favourite artist, I have a favourite moment from artists. Like with Drake, there’s songs he came out with and the timing was perfect for the record.”
While there have been many rappers and Hip-Hop heads who have had negative opinions about “Yeezus,” does 50 Cent have room to talk about someone else’s music since he really hasn’t had a hit album in years?
