After three hours and zero wins for the actors and director Steve McQueen, “12 Years A Slave” pulled a jaw dropping upset by walking away with the coveted Best Motion Picture win.

Visibly shocked, McQueen thanked his life partner Bianca Stigter for introducing him to the story of Solomon Northrup and asked his cast to shout out anyone he might have forgotten in his acceptance speech.

It was the battle of the “It Girls” as Jennifer Lawrence and Lupita Nyong’o  for Best Supporting Actress, but Lawrence, (who won the Best Actress Oscar last year for “Silver Linings Playbook”) walked away with the gold statuette.

Aside from the “12 Years A Slave” win, none of the Black actors/actresses nominated this year won.  Idris Elba who in the running for Best Actor, Motion Picture (“Mandela Long Walk To Freedom”) and Best Actor/Miniseries (“Luther”) got zero love from the Hollywood Foreign Press.  Same for Chiwetel Ejiofor who was nominated for both “12 Years A Slave” and the BBC miniseries “Dancing On The Edge.”

Kerry Washington (“Scandal”) lost to Robin Wright in the Best Actress/TV Drama category for her role as the cold and calculating Claire Underwood in the Netflix  smash series “House of Cards.”   Don Cheadle, nominated for  ”House of Lies” was beat by Andy Samberg (Brooklyn Nine Nine”) in the Best Actor, Comedy/TV series category.

Will “12 Years A Slave” Best Pic win give it the momentum needed to clean up at the Oscars?  We’ll find out March 2nd!
