Jacque Reid goes Inside Her Story with First Lady Chirlane McCray about postpartum depression and the city of New York’s initiative to help women deal with the anxiety new moms may face after giving  birth.

“We stared working on maternal depression before those tragedies happened. We want to get women before they get anything that serious. Maternal depression is so common and it’s treatable. 1 in 10 women will suffer from it.”

Why women won’t get help?

“Women don’t want to talk about it. No one wants to be labeled a bad mom. Its a mark of disgrace not to be filled with joy. ”

What the city of New York will be doing to prevent maternal depression:

“We’ve got a great partnership with our city hospitals and they’ve agreed to train OBGYN and pediatrician to do this routine screening when women go in for their visits. We want the doctors to ask them how they’re doing.”
